plane hits building in Austin

It's the people who are successful AND complain about helping others in need. There's nothing wrong with having money. Actually, it's quite nice. What's not nice is when those who do say those who don't are lazy.

So its wrong to be successful AND complain about having your money taken by force, but its perfectly fine to demean someone's hard work by saying they were just lucky?

Ok, good to know.

As I detailed previously to what can I attribute bumping into my Real Estate agent at the video store, purchasing a building at half the market value, developers moving into the area, land values soaring and, a few years later, selling for six times what I paid? That required absolutely no hard work. It was either luck or guardian angels.

The other building I purchased, although not at half price, also benefited from not only the general housing bubble but developers moving into the area. That netted three times my purchase price.

I wasn't a Real Estate speculator. I was a blue collar worker. I was lucky.

It was not luck that you took advantage of the opportunity. You chose that course.

As noted the luck here is ascribed after the fact.

You could win the lottery tomorrow and that might be good luck. But if you celebrate by getting drunk, running into a telephone pole and ending up a quadriplegic you might call it bad luck. Unless, that then led to something you decided was good.

Luck is a meaningless description. It does not exist and it is stupid to look back on past events and seriously believe that luck had anything to do with the outcomes.

The reason his bomb falied was due to his attempt to make is so that it would not be detected by security.

The bomb could have still worked, despite his hiding it from security.

The other reasons I gave are perfectly valid.

Ok, good to know.

If luck/circumstance isn't involved then you should be able to pass your knowledge to someone else and they could do exactly what you did but it doesn't work that way.

Just consider all these MLMs and network marketing courses on the net. The guy advertising them shows off his expensive car and house. There are thousands and thousands of people trying those courses. Are all the failures lazy?

There are many, many circumstances that lead to a successful business.

If I could show you how to keep your house warm without electricity or fossil fuels, you could get rich in Chicago, but probably wouldn't make a lot of money in Key West.

If you came up with the idea for Pet Rocks, you would have made a bunch of money, but its not repeatable.

IT could have, but did not. The security measures are in place to make it impossable to get a workable bomb into a commercial air plane.

Based on that goal, it worked!

It was not luck that you took advantage of the opportunity. You chose that course.

But I didn't choose anything. I had no idea housing prices would continue to rise and I certainly had no idea developers would be moving in adding to the increase. It just made sense to buy a place to live.

It was luck and only luck. If I had known I would have mortgaged to the hilt and bought at least one more place.

Ok, for the sake of argument, I'll let you have that point.

But the whack job in Texas had given no reason to be detained or watched. He did not pass thru security, since he was flying in his own plane.

What would you suggest be done to prevent people like him in the future? FBI investigations of everyone who complains about taxes and the IRS?

The Xmas bomber and the IRS bomber are two very different situations.

Exactly! That's why I have little patience for people who say it's just a matter of working hard and everyone else is lazy. It's mostly luck/circumstance with work involved.

There are a variety of circumstances that will play into it. But saying it is mostly luck is ignoring the hard work and good choices made by those who became successful.

If someone stays in school, works hard to achieve good grades, works hard to go to college, and then works hard to succeed, they will most likely be a success. They may never become as wealthy as Bill Gates, but they will likely be secure.

Goof off in school, drop out, do just enough to get by, show no interest in the business that hires you, and you will likely never succeed.

You chose to buy. It had nothing to do with luck. Again, that's a meaningless description that you are applying because in hindsight you appreciate the result. You might as well say it was the will of God.

If their laziness or lack of motivation is causing them serious problems then there is something wrong with them. Maybe clinical depression. Maybe a physical ailment.

Do you think the dumpster pickers are healthy, normal people? Do you think the homeless are merely lazy?

And now; Doctor roadapple declares all lazy people as having a serious problem and are probably depressed.

You should really send your diagnosis to the AMA; because you may have just created a whole new field of medicine.

We'll just force lazy people to take Prozac. :palm:

You mean like when you helped those renters of yours!! :good4u:

Oh-wait, you didn't help them; because you were being greedy. :palm:

The building I purchased, the one I sold for 3 times the price, was held by the previous owner for 10 years and they sold it for slightly less than what they originally paid.

As I mentioned the area was depressed.

So, one person buys a building and when they sell it after 10 years they get less than what they paid. Another person (me) buys the building and after 5 years sells it for 3 times what I paid. Whether you call it luck or the will of the Gods the point is it had absolutely nothing to do with hard work.

Hey, I'm a firm believer in better living through chemistry. :)

Actually, I kept my rents below market. That's why my buildings were fully occupied and the value of rental property is determined by the revenue it brings, not just the value of the actual structure.

Bottom line: Joe Stack was no one's hero. Fine, he had an axe to grind with the IRS....WHO DOESN'T? Does that justify murder? Not the last time I checked....and if someone commits murder against a gov't employee(s) on mass because they disagree with gov't policy, that's a terrorist act as far as Homeland Security and the Patriot Act is concerned (remember the Anthrax mailings?). But hey, I guess they're making an exception to the rule here.

Now Joe's daughter makes a public statement that her Dad's a hero for sending America a wake up call (although she didn't condone his murderous action per se). Really? Because when (allegedly) Medicare gave her a raw deal, she up and moved to a country with (GASP!) socialized health care for it's citizens!

Like I said before, Joe's little manifesto needs a heavy dose of suspended disbelief, because for a guy whom the IRS denied a decent career he managed a nice house in the (upper?) middle class AND a plane. So this guy just wasn't wrapped too tight when all is said and done.
