IMO it is common to conflate religious observations for religious penance.
Enlightenment means 'Self-realisation'.
In ancient Rome and Egypt for example, no one had a soul [or a relationship to a higher stratum of existence] except the monarch.
When Jesus died and rose from the dead ---it showed that we all have a non-dying soul.
The rest of the trapping of religious ceremony is meant as penance that facilitates learning about why to continue with keeping to penance.
Ie: the requirements of gaining wealth or beauty or fame or power or ego is to facilitate lessons on how to continue with keeping to gaining more wealth etc.
A real winner learns at each step how to continue to be a winner.
