You did not have to dodge Vietnam. If you were in college or married in the beginning you were safe. Later on, if you had kids you were safe. Even later, we pulled numbers out of a draft barrel and with a high number you were safe.

As more and more people avoided the draft, with college or marriage, it became harder and harder to avoid the draft. The loopholes were closed, and people like trump or Limbaugh had to come up with fake medical conditions to dodge the draft.

The draft was not actually abolished, but rather they started drafting zero people. The system is still in place, and men still have to register for the draft. The current rules have only a one semester exemption for going to college. You would be allowed to finish out the semester, but then be drafted. They will not even consider whether you are married or not.
