Powering Europe with solar via the global solar interconnector

Oh.. You're saying its April Fool's Day........
Yes I am! Didn't the mention of solar arrays floating in the Indian Ocean give it away? Or having an HVDC interconnector over 5000 km long? There is an interconnector from Norway to Holland (NorNed1) over 580km long and that cable weighs 45k tonnes, imagine one weighing nearly 500k tonnes. Apart from that, the transmission losses, even using DC rather AC, would be enormous.

From the OP: "Recent research, however, has revealed that winter in Europe coincides with summer in the Southern Hemisphere and that midnight at longitude zero coincides with midday at longitude 180..."

Wait a minute... according to the author, this is NEW information????

They haven't known for over a hundred years that when it's winter in the northern hemisphere it's summer in the southern hemisphere???

And that when it's midday on one side of the planet it's midnight on the other????

Really????

I coulda sworn that was old news. :dunno:
Another one caught!

Yeah? I'm not familiar with the publication.. My interest goes back to 2000 when I visited KACST to see the Solera project and the HYSOLAR project.

See post #20 from 2013.....

Are you comparing the US and Europe to Africa? Even China and India have cancelled construction of new coal fired power plants.

KSA will be exporting Solar power by 2030.
China is building hundreds of coal power stations worldwide, you have been misinformed. Maybe it was a bad April Fool's joke?

It will be interesting to see the Saudi plans come to fruition, they are not turning to solar for any altruistic reasons though. They want to conserve their oil for export and rely on solar to power their air conditioners. Did you know that aircon uses fully 70% of electricity generated by their hugely inefficient oil fuelled power stations?
