President-elect Donald Trump is poised to enact a dramatic expansion of school choice programs next year that would make it easier for hundreds of thousands of parents to send their children to private schools.

His approach would not steer federal dollars directly to private schools.

When Republicans take control of both chambers of Congress next year, they are expected to advance legislation that would give tax credits to people or businesses who donate to private-school scholarship funds.

More than one million U.S. students now participate in school choice programs.
