It might've been the PhD, actually. I think a PhD scares a lot of employers, oddly making the person less employable.
In a research field I don't see how, although I agree with respect to other fields. In fact after being unemployed for a while I advised her to re-write her resume to omit the advanced degree.

When I first suggested that her response was "but I don't want to lie". I told her that a resume should be tailored to the job that you want. It doesn't have to reflect every qualification, and its sole purpose is to get you an interview. During her interview she should then present her attributes that will help her sell expensive things: her excellent speaking voice and enunciation, her pleasant smile, demeanor and attractive appearance. Two months later she's selling BMWs.
