maybe they should stop DEPENDING on charities and start learning to provide for themselves?
I agree, however, the government should help them learn, be it educational opportunities or medical assistance. Healthy, happy adults want to improve their lot in life.
It we had a child who was despondent would we not try and find out the reason? Just because someone turns 18 or 21 does not mean they can solve all their problems.
Helping someone overcome whatever problem is holding them back benefits not only themselves but society as a whole. Instead of begrudging them assistance and giving them a subsistent amount of money to live on which only exacerbates the problem maybe it's time to take a different approach. A single mother is not going to do well in school if her children are crying from hunger when she's trying to do her homework.
Also, most government assistance programs kick in after the person has lost everything, after they've been beaten to the ground, after they've lost their motivation and will. It's like waiting until a person is dying from an illness rather than intervening at the first sign.
Many people live paycheck to paycheck or as one commentator expressed it, "They're one broken refrigerator away from bankruptcy".
We have the resources to help everyone. We produce more food than our nation requires so why is anyone going hungry?
Look at the housing crisis. Now we have too many new homes but for decades we were told we couldn't possibly supply homes for everyone. Look at the homes under foreclosure. Homes being sold for $25,000. Why isn't the government buying up those homes instead of saying they can't afford to build new housing for the poor?
Rather than the government giving them money for rent, say around $500/mth, give them a mortgage on those homes for $250/mth. and the remaining $250/mth for taxes and maintenance. Five years from now they'll have equity and in the meantime the banks get paid.
It's time to stop claiming we're helping the poor when the reality is all we're doing is barely keeping them alive! Let's help, in the true sense of the word.
