I believe most people are decent but it only takes a few to screw things up for the many. My belief is the more we help people, the more people can count on help, if needed, they will be more inclined to help others. Except for the greedy, of course.

social security was implemented to increase a tax base to cover government spending. It was done with a promise to the aging generation that this would provide for them where they failed to do so with a retirement fund. the only NEED was to increase government spending.

Nonsense. People were helped when the program began. It was for the purpose of helping those and then others as time passed.

which is why the totally compassionate and helpful government reduces SS benefits year after year, then went ahead and dropped SS in the general budget funds so they could plunder it and leave IOUs in its place.....

What's sad is those who think they'll make lots of money, never have a crisis and retire on one of those yachts like the "Freedom 55" ads used to show at the beginning of the decade. The suckers couldn't afford a yacht during the 30-years they were working but figure they'll get one when they retire.

As for the IOU's would you rather have an IOU from Enron? Do you have any idea how company pensions work? Do you think the directors of a company care about their employees pension? What about the companies on Wall Street where the CEOs take home millions while the company stocks are on the floor? Do you want an IOU from them?

SS is there. It is there as long as there is a United States. Do you have any idea how many people lost their entire life savings investing in companies?
