Public backs Obama in birth control fight, poll suggests

Individual health insurance products typically cost one third to one half of group insurance. This price difference is mostly due to medical underwriting, whereby insurance companies can deny or limit coverage based on an applicant ’s health status. In a group plan they cannot deny coverage, thus the costs of those that would otherwise not be able to get coverage are spread among the group. In addition, individual and family health insurance policies often have higher deductibles, limited maternity and limited prescription drug coverage. So that obviously plays a part as well. Individual plans on average are not going to include all that has been added to the cookie cutter group plans. Each individual/family will then add to their plans what they want. That is why it is cheaper.

I can look for the studies again or just search this topic, as Mutt posted the numbers and one study within the last couple of weeks.

For a comparable plan, group plans are cheaper, unless you are perfectly healthy. Most people aren't perfectly healthy. If you are, lucky you! Enjoy you high deductible plan are pray you remain so. But don't pretend that your experience is the norm. It isn't.

Below is a link to a study on the issue comparing comparable plans. The primary finding:

So, SF, while it may be cheaper for you -- a young(ish), healthy male -- it isn't cheaper for everyone else.

63 percent of Americans said they supported the new federal requirement that private health insurance plans cover the cost of birth control, according to the survey of 1,519 Americans, conducted from Feb. 13 to Feb. 19 for the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.

Many Americans, in the survey and in independent interviews, expressed impatience with the focus on women’s reproductive issues in an era of economic distress.

Even if it is sex related last I heard there was nothing in the constitution that said women didn't have a righ to have sex. IT's still none of their business.

Glad to see you're getting in touch with your feminine side.

Now, stop touching yourself.

The Republican party has been hijacked by the moral police. The problem is, no fiscal conservatives are willing to publicly take them on for their intrusive manner in the private lives of Americans.

Another santorum gaffe:

In Boise, Idaho, on Tuesday, Santorum compared contraception to deodorant and soap when making a point about why he believes birth control should not be covered by health insurers.

"Let's mandate that every insurance policy covers toothpaste. Deodorant. That might be a good idea, right? Have everyone cover deodorant, right? Soap. I mean, where do you stop?"

Really, rick?

Yet they wonder why there are so many abortions in the US.

You do understand that if you require the insurance company to pay for something, that the insurance company adjusts EVERYONES insurance premiums? They don't take surveys to say 'are you going to use this option?'. If the costs are spread among everyone, then you are forcing people who object to it to pay for it.

As silly as many of us think it is to be opposed to contraception use, if it is their religious belief, we should not be forcing them to pay for it. Whether they use it directly or not.

In addition, no one is stopping you or anyone else from buying contraception ON YOUR OWN. Why the fuck does this need to be covered for everyone under insurance plans? Subsidize the poor who want it. Leave it up to everyone else to buy their own if they want it.

There is no reason that why insurers can't take account of special factors, now is there? For instance, how many females below the age of 10 or above the age of 55 need contraception? You could also get a reduction for having a vasectomy, sterilisation, hysterectomy, being gay or impotent.
