And this is the essence of why socialism always fails.
Socialism is based on theft of wealth. When you run out your own people to steal from, you have to start plundering your neighbors. Sooner or later you run out of people to steal from, and the socialism (and the government pushing it) must collapse.
Hitler funded his war with the plunder from the nations he conquered. He ran out of people to steal from, and couldn't complete his conquest across the channel to England. Troops were stuck in France with nothing to do (at least until the D-Day invasion came!).
In the end, Hitler ticked off too many people because of his theft, and the Allies and Russia stopped it cold. When Hitler knew it was over, he shot himself.
But, the damage to France and elsewhere in Europe and England was real. It had been done.
Right now, all the countries of the Arctic Circle, except Russia, are in NATO. When trump talks about breaking up NATO, he is talking about giving Russia new inroads into the Arctic Circle.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the US that it would not allow any “encroachments” by NATO in the Arctic as President Trump continues his “serious” quest to acquire Greenland.
Speaking before the Arctic Forum in Russia on Thursday, Putin said the world should not take Trump’s comments lightly and claimed Moscow would be ready to protect its interests in the Arctic if NATO nations expand their territory in the region.
“We will not allow encroachments on the sovereignty of our country and will reliably protect our national interests,” Putin said.
