Question Authority, a Conservative virtue?

IN the past, not so distant past, it was considered a liberal idea that one should question authority.

Those radical hippies of the 60's used to use that slogan....

It was one of the things that helped me to realize that I was a liberal, because I belive storngly in questioning authority and when its right, STANDING up to traditional authority.

As reciently as the Bush administration, the W. Bush administration, I was called unpatirotic for questioning the government. I questioned the reports about Jessica Lynch and Tillman. I questioned the rational for war in Iraq.

Now, and I credit the TEA party for it, the "Conservatives" have adopted this vitrue and seem to belive its been a conservative virtue all alone.

Its social liberalism, but Im glad the Republicans are embracing it.

They tell you its wrong to be Gay, question that!
They tell you women should not work outside the home, question that!
They tell you its unpatirotic to question the war, question that!

Questioning these things is how progress is made...

I just think especally the Religous Conservatives are going to really have a probelm with this new found liberalism in the Conservative movement!

Seriously you social conservatives.. What do you think, is it now okay to question authority?

I think questioning authority is a central part of the American culture, and has been since long before the 60s. Of course the history books are full of examples of GOVERNMENT getting its panties in a wad over the idea, but the fact that government complained means it was going on.

The difference we seem to see today is the authority challenged is all too often limited to those of the opposition party. So democrats will happily oppose republican government, but are equally happy to queue themselves in orderly lines for the daily dose of pasture patties handed out by democratic government. Case in point: the number of democrats who ripped their sphincters having a cow over FISA, yet, because Barry tells them its all "necessary", heap scorn on those opposing the latest TSA policies.

Likewise, republicans will eat elephant shit all day long while criticizing those who do not, and jump on the American Bandwagon of challenging authority whenever it has the jackass trademark behind it. Like the example above, but from the other side, many hard core republican types had little to say (and mostly supportive) of the FISA bill, but are now screaming bloody murder over TSA.

Way too many of us have forgotten the manner of genuine, consistent, critical thinking.

I was often told during the Bush Administration that questioning the war was bad period. Ive heard conservatives, mostly social conservatives, say it is a terrable thing to question authority. Nothing to do with party politics... simply that it was bad in principal and policy.

I consider the above to be an outstanding observation. Thanks for posting it.

I want to see Dixie on this one.... He was the worst offender back in the Bush years.

critical thinking will get you detention if not outright thrown out of most schools

How many times have I questioned liberal authorities, Jarod?

In Jarod's dimly lit world, every admirable trait is automatically a liberal one, somehow.

So its only wrong when you question Conservative authority?

Everyone now denies the arguments from the past about how when
"boots were on the ground" questioning the missions basis was unpatirotic.... and giving aid and comfort to the enemies?

I think the better question would be why you felt the need to add the word "liberal" in your statement?

Does that mean you do not question conservative authorities?

The only authority I do not question is the Word of God. People can think less of me if they want but it is a matter of faith based on evidence that I believe.

Other than that, I definitely question authority, even though I do my best to obey the laws and respect the President.

Rom. 13:1-2 - "1Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves."

I Pet. 2:17 - "Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king."
