Can someone tell me just what the hell all those Americans were doing in Afghanistan in the first place? If they aren't military, then who are they?

A lot of them are Afgan native born but who have obtained American citizenship....how many exactly we dont know but do note the lack of transparency from our government. Americans so often now are not allowed to know the truth, power does not like it, power does not allow it.

And there lies the rub....outside of military personnel and "contractors", there a whole lotta folk who IMHO should not have been in a 20 year active war zone. Everyone's guessing, so it's going to take a little digging to find the answers.

War is a business. The CIA was (is?) in Afghanistan. For example, about one half of the invading army into Iraq were private contractors.

Kabul wasnt a war zone;
and those in the countryside were there (like NGOs) to do cultural or medical ( whatever) outreach
An orderly withdrawal would have let them get out over time

Sorry, but all you mention were under U.S. military presence.....and since you had periodic skirmishes with various Taliban factions, not to mention an escalation in violence over the 20 years every time a scale down of military was proposed, it was hardly the candy land you paint here.
No matter when or how, a total withdrawal of the US military would have resulted in a hot mess not unlike what we are seeing today.
The mind molders would rather you did not know how many coming are culturally Afghani, because the experience of Europe is that they are trouble, trying to take them in does not go well. .

One hell of a supposition/conjecture on your part, as you have no proof to offer. My question is about the "foreign" Americans (which they are in another country) who are not military or private contractors. IMHO, it's kind of stupid to fly into a country under such turmoil unless you got serious business, family or are some type of evangelical fanatic.
