Analysis: Obama must regain momentum after Gates

WASHINGTON – The success of President Barack Obama's ambitious agenda — from health care and climate change to education — could depend on how quickly he recovers from the sharp drop in support among white voters after criticizing a white policeman's arrest of a black Harvard scholar.

you know, it is this bullshit media that keeps race stuff going....so now we categeorize political response based SOLELY on race

and who soaks this up.....which party..............the dems

Bottom line: people should be worrying more about Congress giving the military another hefty, pork laden budget than whether another "uppity negro playing the race card and getting over with Obama's approval". But hey, this article plays right into the bullshit, and it sells papers. Go figure.

Even for those blacks who did make it, questions of race, and racism, continue to define their worldview

For the men and women of Reverend Wright's generation, the memories of humiliation and doubt and fear have not gone away; nor has the anger and the bitterness of those years

That anger may not get expressed in public, in front of white co-workers or white friends

Could it be because some folks are always around to pick up and run with race issues? Can you explain why, with a war to fight and an economy to build, it's the issue that one can count on for you to be there early if not first?

Yet it's Gates, not Crowley, getting threats because of the incident.

A glass of beer and a show of flowers may have done the trick in easing relations between Harvard scholar Henry Gates and his arresting police officer Sgt. Crowley, but now new problems are arising from the incident. Today, Gates appearing in at a book signing on Martha's Vineyard told the media he's been receiving both death and bomb threats and has had to change his e-mail address and phone number. Harvard officials are also suggesting he consider moving.

Those were the same issues that came to my mind when I heard Obama had commented on the Crowley Gates thing, HMMM what kind of President can take the time out of his supposedly busy day to comment on a police issue ?

As for the race issue, if Obama didn't make it a race issue why all the damage control?

At the end of the day if the President hadn't had gotten involved would it become the issue it has? Probably not.

Racially profiling and treatment of minorities by the police has always been a hot button topic brewing just under the surface. Having this incident happen to such a well known black man where both sides overreacted brought it national attention. But would it had reached the levels it did without the President voicing an opinion on it? Again, it probably wouldn't.

Then you throw in the fact that its a black President who for the most part is very disiplined about being diplomatic and it went to a whole other level.

I agree with ya, the only issue I have with the whole thing is Obama got involved cause he was a black man and his friend, There is no doubting Obama has a lot on his plate now, but yet he still felt the need to put his two cents in, and then added insult to injury by saying he doesn't have all the facts, that made it a racist statement to me, the police and public have many issues, I say public cause although you are correct about the hot button with blacks and police, there is also a hot button with whites and police, not as bad by no means, but it is there.

Obama being a black president should never even enter the subject, he is president to all Americans, no matter what color they are.

Obama is usually really disciplined and here's a case where he knows the guy so he kind of slips and escalates this issue as a result. Even many left-leaning people on this board have said this wasn't Obama's finest moment and he shouldn't have gotten involved. Haha, my bad I'm now lost track as to what the beggining of the thread was about.

Her point is that it's not just some hold over memory or angst...but a current reality. Most people who are NOT on the receiving end wouldn't understand, recognize or acknowledge this.

for crying out loud, like you will ever erase any type of racism in any Society..
It happens to every race of people..just how much longer are we going to have this shoved in our faces..about us Americans are RACIST, and it seems it only always the white race who are pointed out as being racist..
I for one is getting sick and tired of being accused of being a racist, when I know I am not one....
Every race of people is Racist against another, there isn't a damn thing we can do about..
sheesh
