Well, references to "rice" are pretty common features in anti-asian slurs. I don't think these guys living up in Vermont have much experience with anti-asian bigotry, and were just trying to come up with a vaguely ethnic theme for dish associated with a single ethnicity. I don't think it's too difficult to imagine why some people would find it offensive, though; imagine an ad with a generic afro-themed background saying something like "MMMM, dat fried chicken and wadamelon!!!"
