Perhaps you have worked at "better" and "more tolerant"...but that hardly covers the spectrum of food places that exist.

My family owned a restaurant...and I started working in it while in grammar school. I worked in many other places...and I was the director of instruction at the largest bartenders/restaurant management school in the world at one time.

In any case, I've been around the block a few times...and unless you have lived primarily in the Vatican...you should have seen stuff that makes this seem tame.

But...you wanted to be over the top...and you were.

Food service...like most service industry...is replete with amateurs. Teachers, cops, firemen, mechanics, taxi drivers...and all sorts...think they can successfully run a bar or eatery.

A success...which probably comes as often as success at breaking into the baseball major leagues...mostly comes with excruciatingly hard work...with hours that are figured in weeks rather than days, because they are so many. And you never really hire people...you take on silent partners...ones with no feed money stake.

If we started a thread...my first comment would be: If you want to buy or open a bar or a restaurant...first hang yourself for 20 minutes with a noose around your neck. If you are still alive after the 20 minutes...give it another haldf hours before going ahead with the plan.

that's awesome.......you probably have more experience than I do, then. but mostly because your family owned a restaurant and you're much older. But I have plenty of "food place" experiences to draw from... and I've never seen Anyone refused service unless they were out of physical or verbally harming other customers...or stealing things...
So, no...I've never seen anyone asked to leave that was even similar to what happened with Mrs. Sanders and her family. If you have, I'd love for you to give me an example....I was not "over the top"...but you are certainly welcome to your opinion;)
You're in Jersey, right? That might explain the things you've "seen", though...
I spent some serious summers in Chatham and Morristown..;)

Oh yes, all the "racism workshops" she went to on MLK Day, and cookies baked. All the while sitting at home posting the same photos of dogs on social media, dozens and dozens. Same with the Pridefest parade. And on and on and on.

So you must be Very aware that Poor Fowl Steph hung that noose you mentioned around her neck, asked for a vote from her staff, and jumped...really an incredibly stupid thing to do after being successful business in the business for a good amount of time... dumb, dumber, dumbest thing ever...
(I suggested a thread to tell funny restaurant/culinary experiences...
It is tremendously hard work, isn't it? But so much fun if you love to cook, and if you aren't the owner...or the former owner....)

I enjoyed the "You're in Jersey, right" comment. Yeah, we tend to be a bit more in-your-face here than in some other spots.

Anyway...the original comment (that I said was over the top) was a bit different from what you said here. The original comment was, "In all the years I've had connections with the food service industry, I've never seen such a poor display of leadership."

I've seen (and worked for) some owners who made this woman's "leadership" skills look world-class. I once had to threaten an owner who was giving me shit on the phone that if he called back (I had hung up on him twice)...I would tell everyone in the bar that I was walking out...and the register and bar stock was theirs to do with as they please!

My father was especially proud of his soups (for good reason, he was a master) and once took a bowl of soup away from a customer who was about to lace a bowl of his bean soup with ketchup. Told the guy to get the hell out...and not come back. Pop had a toot on...he never met a bottle he didn't want to drink. But my guess is my brother and sister both thought of that incident when reading about the Red Hen event.

My guess...she lands on her feet and in an improved situation.

But there is also the chance that she finally decided the business demanded too goddam much time and effort...and made a move that would get her out from under with a flair.

I'm more than okay with her doing it. I was okay with the asshole who's love for god prevented him from making a cake for a gay marriage.

I further guess that she is more okay with what she did than she is going to let on. Of course, my position in all this is clouded a tiny bit because I think Sarah Sanders is a fucking piece of furniture being used carelessly by a scumbag owner. It wouldn't have bothered me appreciably if the owner had her thrown out on her ass.

Ok...as usual, we'll have to agree to disagree....on just about everything...(I say she's pretty much done in Lexington, as she should be...;) No problemo....
