I probably would've tested out the charm by having him shoot me in the leg or something, rather than the heart. That's just me.

Then again, I probably wouldn't have bought the charm, or joined a militant organization.

I don't think that Yurt was trying to imply that the bible had any magical powers. It's just somewhat amusing to see something so cliche play out in real life. Obviously, if you put a bible in front of a lot of hearts in a war zones, eventually one is going to be there when someone's shot, and perhaps it shields the blow somewhat.
