Republican Ballot Harvesting

I would allow for some collection of ballots under controlled circumstances, there may be people unable to vote in person or mail a ballot that need a third party collection agency.

While a "third party collection agency" is a welcome form of oversight, IMO, it's important to have bipartisan oversight as well.

It's one thing to support Voter ID, which I do, but it's another to support Voter ID while secretly seeking to turn it into a backdoor poll tax.

I do. Floridafan apparently doesn't. That's why I called him / her out on it.

Good. I haven't seen where Floridafan has supported Democrat election cheating but it's a good question to ask him if he does.
You whine and cry every fucking day how terrible this is, how Democrats are using it to seal elections- all the while you do it yourself.

Floridafan, do you support Democrat, or anyone, cheating in elections, voter disenfranchisement or any form of ballot box stuffing?

by "third party collection" she's not talking about oversight.......she's talking about people going around and gathering other people's ballots........personally I think the post office already does that free.......

Agreed. The present system has worked fine for as long as I can remember. Why Trump suddenly thinks it's vast, wide Chinese conspiracy (or whatever he thinks at the moment) is a mystery to me.

Leaked videos taken from inside a secretive right-wing organization show many top conservative operatives openly advocating ballot harvesting during the 2020 presidential election, even as President Donald Trump accused Democrats of using such tactics to steal elections.

The Washington Post reports that the videos show longtime evangelical operative Ralph Reed boasting of his plans to harvest ballots from multiple places of worship for the benefit of Republican candidates.

“Our organization is going to be harvesting ballots in churches,” he said. “We’re going to be specifically going in not only to White evangelical churches, but into Hispanic and Asian churches, and collecting those ballots.”

Trump, however, tweeted earlier this year that he wanted to “GET RID OF BALLOT HARVESTING, IT IS RAMPANT WITH FRAUD.”

J. Christian Adams, a former Justice Department official and the president of the Public Interest Legal Foundation, was also shown on video attacking mail-in voting, which he said he wanted to stop by any means necessary.

“Be not afraid of the accusations that you’re a voter suppressor, you’re a racist and so forth,” he said as he encouraged conservatives to go out of their way to block mail-in ballots.

Not speaking for Floridafan, but when has Trump ever been right when he's talking about election fraud?

So that video of a "secretive" organization was not an example of election fraud?

Harvesting is legal in some states and illegal in others.

Yes, it would be. Why do you think I'm saying it's not?

I'm pretty sure Federal election laws prevent election fraud. Do you know differently?

You said "when has Trump ever been right when he's talking about election fraud?" and Trump said it was fraud; so, I assumed you were saying Trump was not correct.

Fraud is against federal law but I don't think ballot harvesting is against federal law.

I don't know enough about the particular incident described in the video to know if it was illegal and it would differ depending on the state.

I generally don't give much credence to hidden videos whether this one or the one from Project Veritas on Rep. Omar.

That's exactly what I was saying. Trump has repeatedly cried wolf on voter fraud. Like LWers screaming racism every time someone disagreed with Obama, Trump is screaming fraud for political reasons. That's not to say trust and verification in our election system isn't necessary. It's just to say Trump is screaming fraud for political purposes not always supported by facts.

As for "ballot harvesting". Collecting legitimate votes, as long as it's legal, is fine with me. Isn't that the same as hiring a bus to collect a bunch of old people from a retirement home and driving them to vote?

Okay, read up on it.

Ballot harvesting is a major potential means of voter fraud. It is pushed primarily by the Democrats up through the national level where Democrats in Congress have tried to put it in legislation repeatedly.

Ballot harvesting in a nutshell, allows a political operative or other third party to collect ballots from voters and turn them into election officials. This creates an opportunity for that person to manipulate or eliminate ballots they collect. It is an obvious and onerous idea that should be made entirely illegal nationally.

Did you bother to read those articles that you're using for a reference???

"California Republicans decried the practice, then moved to adopt it this year after a devastating 2018 midterm blowout."

Both you and he were referring to Democrats harvesting ballots. While you scream and rant about it, the Republicans do the same or worse while no one is looking.

As usual, you are making assumptions based on your partisan prejudices.

I said nothing about Democrats harvesting ballots and never said one thing against mail-in balloting nor scream or rant. I have said experts agree mail-in voting is the most common (and easiest) type of election fraud, but it not a big problem.

I just wondered if you think Trump was right about fraud in ballot harvesting because you seemed to think it was a problem with the "secretive" Republican group apparently engaged in (possibly illegal) activities.

If ballot harvesting is a problem it is equally a problem whether coming from the Democrats or Republicans. There are several examples of prosecutions from both sides in 2018 and 2020 primaries.

CA Republicans are harvesting ballots per the letter of a really awfully written law. CA Dems assumed the GOP would never be able to use this law to their advantage when they crafted the legislation. Now they are crying-up a river.

Pro Tip: abolish the stupid law.
