Republican claims 'legitimate rape' rarely results in pregnancy

Answering a question about whether or not he thought abortion should be legal in the case of rape, Akin explained his opposition by citing unnamed medical mechanisms he said prevented pregnancy.

"First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare," Akin said of rape-induced pregnancy in an interview with KTVI. A clip of the interview was posted online by the liberal super PAC American Bridge.

"If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin continued. He did not provide an explanation for what constituted "legitimate rape."

He added: "But let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something. You know I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child."

seriously? what an idiot. :palm:

Wait .. legitimate WHAT?

"but the punishment ought to be on the RAPIST"

Obama thanks him for all the women he just sent running his way..

so women will run towards obama because of one stupid republican?

I do appreciate your honesty in posting this even though you are a republican. I find that commendable.

That being said, this just reinforces what many already think of the Republican Party ..

nice dodge of my question. thank you for compliment.

your last statement is unfortunately accurate. there are, however, idiots in both parties. it just seems the republicans make more mistakes when it comes to women issues. he claims now, he misspoke, but seriously? how can you misspeak legitimate rape? how can you claim that a legitimate rape won't get you pregnant and then claim - oh i misspoke.

I didn't dodge your question.

Yes, this will send more women Obama's way .. not just because of this one guy .. but because it reinforces what many already think of the Republican Party.

Add this to men .. republican men .. thinking they have the right to tell women what to do with their vagina's.

you said many, not women, so it was not clear you were referring to women. i don't think it will send many women over to obama. i think most women are smart and recognize that this is just one stupid politician and won't switch parties or vote for the "other guy" simply because of one person.

can you give me an example of a republican man telling a woman what to do with her vagina? i have never heard of such a republican.

Virginia legislates forced vaginal exam

The ultrasound legislation would constitute an unprecedented government mandate to insert vaginal ultrasonic probes into women as part of a state-ordered effort to dissuade them from terminating pregnancies, legislative opponents noted.

"We're talking about inside a woman's body," Del. Charnielle Herring, a Democrat, said in an emotional floor speech. "This is the first time, if we pass this bill, that we will be dictating a medical procedure to a physician."

and to add insult to injury, the woman has to pay for the state mandated assault

as i have posted before, republicans want to control women via removing more and more of their reproductive rights

while that is sick and i said so when it came on the board earlier....that still is not telling women "what to do with their vaginas".

care to try again? or do i need to explain to you what "do" means?

if it was just one politician i could buy your argument, but there are too many republican sponsored and republican voted for restrictions on women's reproductive rights/issues...this is why more and more women are not voting republican

the republican radical right is sponsoring this agenda and the rest of the party is afraid to nay say them - they fear being attacked when they are up for reelection as not being conservative enough

the repugs are destroying their own party

who knows, if they get trounced badly enough they may go back to being the party of personal freedom and fiscal responsibility and stop with the religious social engineering

oh well

it is both their vagina's and uterus's that they want to control

they only want women to have sex for reproduction and never just for pleasure...that is against 'god's will'

Don't bother. You don't have to explain anything. Telling them they need to stick an instrument into their vaginas that they didn't ask for .. of course that's not telling them what to do with their vaginas.

no it isn't. period. the women are not doing anything with their vaginas. they are being violated. your bizarre theory is like saying a rape victim used their body to facilitate sex.

uterus is correct in this line of thought.

i'm not sure all republicans or conservatives agree with you last statement. i don't doubt you believe that, but i don't think that is true. just as i don't think liberals want to erode all private sector business.

Huh. I thought republicans didn't believe in rape?

Side thought: ekg...I think we finally figured out where Sam went to.

two studies done in 98 and 00 showed about 25,000 pregnancies per year from rape. http://womensenews.org/story/rape/051227/some-hospitals-withhold-plan-b-after-rape.

Statistically, the chance of getting pregnant from a rape that involved penis-to-vagina penetration and male orgasm (of course not all rapes do) is about 5%, the same as for consenting sex under the same circumstances.

http://www.rainn.org/get-information/statistics/sexual-assault-victims

If many social conservatives had there way, all 25,000 per year would be forced to carry their rapists children to term.
