Republican claims 'legitimate rape' rarely results in pregnancy

uterus is correct in this line of thought.

i'm not sure all republicans or conservatives agree with you last statement. i don't doubt you believe that, but i don't think that is true. just as i don't think liberals want to erode all private sector business.

i do not think that all repubs want this just those on the radical religious right, but too many other repubs do not speak against it for fear of being branded 'not conservative enough'

two studies done in 98 and 00 showed about 25,000 pregnancies per year from rape. http://womensenews.org/story/rape/051227/some-hospitals-withhold-plan-b-after-rape.

Statistically, the chance of getting pregnant from a rape that involved penis-to-vagina penetration and male orgasm (of course not all rapes do) is about 5%, the same as for consenting sex under the same circumstances.

http://www.rainn.org/get-information/statistics/sexual-assault-victims

If many social conservatives had there way, all 25,000 per year would be forced to carry their rapists children to term.

some rapists are smart enough to wear condoms and make their victims shower afterwards to remove traces of dna

however, most are too stupid to do so

it would help if there were not tv shows that tell criminals how not to get caught by not leaving trace evidence, but that only applies to first time offenders as prisoners tell other prisoners about such things

prisons are educational in that way

oh well

HuffPo got it right on this one. How in the hell do these idiots get elected?

Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) justified his extreme opposition to abortion by claiming that victims of "legitimate rape" rarely get pregnant.

In an interview with KTVI-TV on Sunday, the GOP Senate nominee was asked if he supported abortion in the case of rape.

"From what I understand from doctors, that's really rare," said Akin said of pregnancy caused by rape. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume maybe that didn't work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist."

Akin won a three-way primary on Aug. 7 for the rights to a November battle against incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.). McCaskill was "stunned" by Akin's Sunday comments.

Me being a mo and all...can anyone explain how a woman "shut(s) that whole thing down"?

If women can "shug that whole thing down", then why is there a need for abortion? Or contraception?

Rethugs want to 'redefine' rape... and have all male panels make policy on womens health concerns. How 'intelligent' is that?

and to add insult to injury, the woman has to pay for the state mandated assault

as i have posted before, republicans want to control women via removing more and more of their reproductive rights

Thanks to the Tea Party that ushers in the most offensive and stank politicians that they can scrap off the toliet bowl.

Don't bother. You don't have to explain anything. Telling them they need to stick an instrument into their vaginas that they didn't ask for .. of course that's not telling them what to do with their vaginas.

"that still is not telling women what to do with their bodies..."-another CLASSIC Yurt dodge!

It's telling women what they WILL HAVE DONE TO their bodies if they want to have an abortion...

Watching Yurt parse words is absolutely hysterical!

Of COURSE telling women they must have an instrument shoved into their vaginas that they didn't ask for is a perfect example of men telling women what they can and cannot do with their vaginas...

Except for Yurt it is more important to play bullshit semantic word games than it is to admit he's been proven wrong yet again.

Republican claims 'legitimate rape' rarely results in pregnancy

Answering a question about whether or not he thought abortion should be legal in the case of rape, Akin explained his opposition by citing unnamed medical mechanisms he said prevented pregnancy.

"First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare," Akin said of rape-induced pregnancy in an interview with KTVI. A clip of the interview was posted online by the liberal super PAC American Bridge.

"If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin continued. He did not provide an explanation for what constituted "legitimate rape."

He added: "But let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something. You know I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child."

seriously? what an idiot. :palm:
It's amazing how politics work. I'm pretty sure this guy was leading McCaskill in the polls and had a good shot of winning. I'd say not now.

Though in a side note he did invent a new oxymoron. "Legitimate Rape".

You know you have to wonder if this guy was bright enough to figure out that he had just ended his political career when he made his moronic comments?

I do appreciate your honesty in posting this even though you are a republican. I find that commendable.

That being said, this just reinforces what many already think of the Republican Party ..
That's not true. This isn't a partisan thing. It's a stupid thing. Even GOP politicians are shooting this guy down for being a moron and saying something inexcusibly offensive and stupid.

yuck enuff used to claim he was a lawyer. He now lies and says he didn't but my memory is long and vivid on this accord. His obsessions with wordplay and nonsensical semantics I believe he thinks to be great demonstrations of his lawyerly skills and his dedication to accepted jurisprudence. He whined and cried and accused me and others of making fun of his profession. None of us were ever laughing at his stated profession. We were laughing at him and his claims (lies). He knows that what I say is true but he'll deny it and whine just like he always does every time his mama let's him play on the computer machine.

If you belive that life begins at conception, why should there be an abortion exception for rape? Should a life be punished for the sins of its father?

Republicans are giving lip service to what he said but most of them support the same draconian abortion laws that this moron and PAUL RYAN do.

Just about everything that comes out of the Tea Party is inexcusibly offensive and stupid.

You know you have to wonder if this guy was bright enough to figure out that he had just ended his political career when he made his moronic comments?

I bet he has said essentially the same thing to Tea Party crowds many times.

He's probably wondering what's the big deal.

I'm sure you're right. These people live in a very different world...they should never be put in any position of power.
