“The Trump Administration Buys a Stake in Yet Another Company”

“The federal government is, at the moment, incapable of completing its most basic and routine task—passing a budget—and yet it is simultaneously expanding its portfolio to include a 10 percent ownership stake in an Alaskan mining company.”

“That company, Trilogy Metals, will receive a $35.6 million "investment," the Trump administration announced on Monday. In return, the federal government will own 10 percent of the company (and will have the option to buy another 7.5 percent at some later date). The deal seems to follow the same blueprint that the Trump administration has used to seize stakes in U.S. Steel, Intel, and others

Forbes reported Tuesday, one of the biggest beneficiaries of this deal is John Paulson, a Trump donor who was once on the short list to lead the Treasury Department. Paulson owns 8.7 percent of Trilogy, and his shares are now worth more than $100 million, up from $30 million yesterday.”

We already have to bail out Red States’ budgets and now we got chip in to enrich Trump’s buddies?

And I thought MAGA was so against Socialism? Opposed Government getting involved in the private sphere? Less Government not one expanding into buying private companies?

So many times one see with Trump and MAGA the applicability of the old proverb, “do as I say, not as I do”

When did you start reading libertarian writing? I agree with Reason. This is crony capitalism, or China style state run capitalism. The days of Republicans following free market orthodoxy are long gone.

Under Trump, as with Obama and Biden for Democrats, “strategic investments” under the guise of national security have become acceptable. Unfortunately, I don’t see a retreat from this any time soon.

I told you, I read, and I’m not totally against the move, well, other than with this President, I question then motive and timing, I just thought it a good illustration of the MAGA’s lack of understanding of what defines socialism

And you are a conservative, MAGA is not

You hit on the heart of partisan politics. Person A and Person B can do the exact same thing, and we see it completely differently based on how we feel about each person.

I’ll admit I wasn’t familiar with this deal. Maybe I’m being an ideologue in saying I’m against it, but I just don’t buy most of the “strategic interests” arguments for the government inserting itself even further into the economy.

We live in a plutonomy run by technocrats. Citigroup wrote the playbook then selected Obama to run their plays. We saw a Wall Street bailout as 15 million families were foreclosed on.

Bloods and Crips sitting here squabbling all day should show they don't need us for anything.

Rather confusing, lot going on there

We evolved into a plutocracy over the course of the last seventy years, not good, but worked as long as one entity didn’t dominate, most acting when it was in their interests. But today, with this Administration, we are developing an actual oligarchy like Russia’s, which is counter to the intent of the Founders

Trilogy Metals is a Canadian company. Oligarchs want a world government controlled by the IMF and World Bank. The US bailout of Argentina is already at $40 billion to keep a friend of a friend from losing money on his investment.

We are closing in on the 20th anniversary of one of the most revealing pieces of bank analyst research in recent American history. On October 16, 2005, Citigroup released an “industry note” for investors that started with a bracing statement: “The World is dividing into two blocs—the Plutonomy and the rest.”
