A nationally known sheriff resigned from presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's Arizona committee and acknowledged he was gay after a Mexican immigrant with whom he had a relationship accused him of threatening to have him deported.

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu denied he had threatened the Mexican immigrant, a former campaign volunteer, with deportation if he made their past relationship public. :palm:

Any thoughts on the hyporcisy of an anti-immigration politician/law enforcement officer having an illegal immigrant for a lover?

The sheriff and congressional candidate said his personal life was none of anyone's business, and said a couple times during the press
conference that it was "almost a relief" for his orientation to be out in the open.

Babeu characterized the business dispute as ending after his attorney, Chris DeRose, demanded from Jose all the passwords to the
accounts they say were hacked. However, letters provided to New Times detail continued exchanges between DeRose and Melissa Weiss-Riner.

If the matters were settled, and there were no further attempts to persuade Jose into silence, then why would DeRose continue contacting Weiss-Riner?

Weiss-Riner, who received the phone calls directly from DeRose, stands by her clients' allegations.

Babeu admitted to reporters that he did have a personal relationship with Jose, the man who reached out to New Times to share his story. And he also said he did not deny the veracity of the text messages or photos published by our publication.

In one series of texts, the sheriff himself appears to be threatening his former lover:

Babeu: "You can never have business after this and you will harm me and many others in the process . . . including yourself & your
family."

Nearly 800 people commented on Babeu’s Facebook page under a statement posted by the sheriff denying the “false allegations” but
acknowledged that he is gay.

Babeu dismissed the allegation that he threatened his ex-boyfriend, who was only identified by his first name, Jose, as “blatantly,
completely false.”

“At no time did I or anyone who represents me ever threaten deportation, ever” he said at a press conference Saturday. “I never
believed he was less legal than I or you are.”

But texts obtained by the Phoenix New Times that were traced back to Babeu’s phone number told a different story.

“The issue is not sexual orientation,” Patricia Selliger commented. “The issue is hypocrisy — a public stand on border security all the
while allowing an illegal alien to work on your website and conducting a personal relationship with him. If we expect employers to verify employees’ status, public figures should be held to the same standard.”

Paul Babeu built a reputation as a rising, conservative star by taking a hardline stance against illegal immigration, attacking the Obama administration and appearing alongside Sen. John McCain in a 2010 re-election ad in which McCain urged federal officials to just "complete the danged fence."

But, on Saturday, Babeu's conservative image took a beating as he was forced to confirm publicly that he is gay and was involved in a relationship with a Mexican immigrant who claims the sheriff threatened to have him deported if he revealed their relationship.

Babeu denies any wrongdoing, and has vowed to continue his battle for the GOP nomination in an extremely conservative rural congressional district. He recognizes he is fighting an uphill battle, especially in a state where family values, as defined by a large evangelical Christian and Mormon population, often battle fierce, anti-immigrant beliefs to define conservatism.

At a lengthy press conference, Babeu said he hopes voters will stick with him.

His competitors think that's unlikely. Arizona Sen. Ron Gould says Babeu is sure to lose major support among the family-values voters who oppose gay marriage.

Babeu previously avoided a public stance on gay rights, but came out in favor of them on Saturday.

This is the guy who helped Az's drunken Gov. whip up the Teabaggers with the 'headless bodies in the desert' lies. Remember that wing nuts? Didn't think so.

With all the anti-gay rhetoric going on around here, how does it make you 'conservatives' feel knowing one of your leaders is out of the closet?

Kinda puts a different spin on him being an up-and-comer.

He's a sweet Babeu. :mun:

LOL!

Hilarious.

The anti-immigrant bunch is disowning him as we speak.
