Republicans love their thought-terminating clichés

Republicans love their TTC's.

What is a thought-terminating cliche?

Demagogues use them a lot, to manipulate their flock.

They are designed to curb, limit critical thinking and curb dissent, and if possible, kill both entirely.

You see, Demagogues like Trump don't like it when his flock thinks critically, because if they do, they will soon figure out that he is a con man, a criminal, a fraudster and sex abuser, since the hard data and facts point inescapably to these conclusions. But a mind full of TTCs will fog the landscape, make them much harder to see.

The second purpose is to curb dissent, and no one hates dissent more than demagogues like Trump.

The really big TTC is 'TDS', Trump Derangement Syndrome'. That's a real beaut, 'tis true.

But the meaning the right has concocted and ascribed to it, well, that's not true at all. As we shall see.

TDS, which is thought-terminating cliche accepted into the minds of many Trumpsters (by Trump, or his surrogates) for the purpose of curbing critical thought and killing dissent.

Oh, and you thought it was a real condition. Tsk tsk.

You see, Repubs, because real conditions do not exist only in the minds of one side of a political spectrum, they are listed in medical reference books and conditions do not behave politically, they can strike anyone. That is to say, if it was, indeed, a real condition and not an arbitrary construct created by a political party or the party's demagogue leader in order to manipulate followers to do the leader's bidding.

The truth is, it was concocted so that Trumpsters (meaning, fans of Trump) could end the conversation without feeling guilty for not engaging in a real debate. A fate which comports to the purpose of a TTC, described above. So, a (an occasional, but not every) MAGA type might say: "Ahh, that's 'TDS' I don't have to bother debating it nor feel guilty about it". It's a nice, cute, quaint, lazy retort. And that is precisely Trump's objective with TTC's such as this one. Others, see below..

Proof of all of this will be clearly revealed in Republicans' response to this comment.

Fire away!

Here's a list of typical Republican thought-terminating cliches:

  • "TDS" (Trump Derangement Syndrome) – This is often used to dismiss any criticism of Donald Trump by framing the critic as irrational or obsessed, rather than engaging with the substance of the criticism.
  • "Fake news" – Popularized by Trump, this phrase is used to discredit media outlets or stories that don't align with their views, bypassing any critical evaluation of the information itself.
  • "RINO" (Republican in Name Only) – This label is used to delegitimize Republicans who are seen as not conservative enough or who criticize party leadership, especially Trump, shutting down any intra-party dissent.
  • "Socialist" or "Marxist" – Used to quickly label Democratic policies or progressive ideas, framing them as radical or extreme without addressing the specific merits or drawbacks of the policies themselves.
  • "Snowflake" – A term used to dismiss individuals who express sensitivity to issues of social justice or inequality, implying that their concerns are trivial or overblown.
  • "Woke" – This has become a blanket term for dismissing progressive values or discussions about social justice, often used to end debates by implying those views are irrational or excessive.
  • "Deep state" – A way to dismiss government institutions or officials who may disagree with certain Republican policies by suggesting they are part of a hidden, malevolent force working against the people's interests.
  • "Cancel culture" – Used to deflect accountability for offensive or controversial behavior, framing any backlash or criticism as unjustified suppression of free speech rather than engagement with the consequences of one's actions.

Inversion fallacy. You are describing Democrats.

And you have it.
But the meaning the right has concocted and ascribed to it, well, that's not true at all. As we shall see.
You don't get to blame your problems on Trump.
TDS, which is thought-terminating cliche accepted into the minds of many Trumpsters (by Trump, or his surrogates) for the purpose of curbing critical thought and killing dissent.
Fallacy fallacy. TDS is not a thought terminating cliche.
Oh, and you thought it was a real condition. Tsk tsk.
It is, and you have it.

It doesn't end any conversation. Fallacy fallacy.
So, a (an occasional, but not every) MAGA type might say:
MAGA isn't a person, Sybil.

Attempted proof by redefinition.
Fire away!

Here's a list of typical Republican thought-terminating cliches:

  • "TDS" (Trump Derangement Syndrome) – This is often used to dismiss any criticism of Donald Trump by framing the critic as irrational or obsessed, rather than engaging with the substance of the criticism.
Repetition fallacy.
  • "Fake news" – Popularized by Trump, this phrase is used to discredit media outlets or stories that don't align with their views, bypassing any critical evaluation of the information itself.
No, it's 'news' organizations that aren't. They are propaganda centers.
  • "RINO" (Republican in Name Only) – This label is used to delegitimize Republicans who are seen as not conservative enough or who criticize party leadership, especially Trump, shutting down any intra-party dissent.
No, they are Democrats running under a false flag.
  • "Socialist" or "Marxist" – Used to quickly label Democratic policies or progressive ideas, framing them as radical or extreme without addressing the specific merits or drawbacks of the policies themselves.
Go read the writings of Marx, which Democrats agree with. Democrats are socialists.
  • "Snowflake" – A term used to dismiss individuals who express sensitivity to issues of social justice or inequality, implying that their concerns are trivial or overblown.
A modern term, true. But a good description.
  • "Woke" – This has become a blanket term for dismissing progressive values or discussions about social justice, often used to end debates by implying those views are irrational or excessive.
No, it IS the 'progressive values' (which simply means NO values!).
  • "Deep state" – A way to dismiss government institutions or officials who may disagree with certain Republican policies by suggesting they are part of a hidden, malevolent force working against the people's interests.
No, it is the army of unelected bureaucrats, making their own rules outside of Congress.
  • "Cancel culture" – Used to deflect accountability for offensive or controversial behavior, framing any backlash or criticism as unjustified suppression of free speech rather than engagement with the consequences of one's actions.
No, it is the Democrats attempt to cancel, censor, and bury dissenting views.

NONE are thought terminating cliches. Fallacy fallacies. Redefinition fallacy.

Okay, give me two that are more pervasive and over used, including being based on a manufactured premise, on par with 'TDS' and 'fake news'.

I''ll be waiting.
"According to experts..."
"....is an established fact."

I'll limit it to just two, since that's all you asked for.

Right-wing (fill in the blank). A general pejorative to dismiss anything and everything not said by a Leftist source. A corollary of that is FOX News! Same thing just more specific.

Another litany of Leftist thought terminating words / cliches:

You are a--

Racist
Sexist
Homophobe
Xenophobe
Islamophobe
Hater
Bigot
Fascist
Authoritarian
Dictator
MAGA or MAGAT

Misinformation / disinformation
Russian (fill in the blank)

Clearly, you do not understand what a TTC is.

Misinformation/disinformation, are regular dictionary words, and unlike 'fake news' or 'TDS' these words do not curb critical thinking, nor curb dissent, they invite more discussion, and are often accompanied with substantiation.

TDS, however, is always used to try and kill the conversation, whereby the user no longer feels the need to have to continue the conversation. Why/ Because it's TDS. Since the perceived/alleged perp has this 'condition', he or he is not rational. That's why it is a TTC.

' Do you see the difference? "Russian' is an adjective. Sorry. You are conflating common terms, ordinary cliches, with 'thought-terminating cliches', they are not the same. The operative standard is this: "Does this forward discourse? Or is it trying to end it. Misinformation will always invite discussion. If not offered, just ask for substantiation.

MAGA or MAGAT

All of those terms invite substantiation, and by that measure, do not:

1. Curb dissent.
2. Curb critical thinking.

MAGA could be used as a TTC, though it's hardly been hijacked by the left (though it tries), as the right wears it like a badge of honor.

'Wannabe dictator' might be a TTC, depending on context, whether it's user invites more discussion, is willing to substantiate. I think there's a good argument that it is a TTC.

I've never seen any lefty call anyone a homophobe, unless there was evidence for it. I would call Trump a misogynist, and if someone asks me for substantiation, I would offer it, so that can't be a TTC (though you didn't mention it, but I'm sure you would have, had you thought of it).

THere is evidence of Trump's racism, but it invites more substantiation, and it's debatable. Not eveyrone who uses racist terms, per se, is actually a full blown racist, as in a member of the KKK. That's why that isn't a TTC, using the term still forwards a debate, forwards the discourse.

"Hater', that is used like a TTC, but by both sides.

Xenophobe, a term attributed to Trump given his apparent hatred of immigrants, is it a TTC? I think it is a legit characterization, and, if anyone asks for substantiation, most lefties will provide it, so I'm not seeing that as a TTC. In Trump's defense, he could be a xenophobe towards the large body of people, but not necessarily to individuals, especially those he might know, personally, but that is a point of contention, an item for more discussion, and so it, per se, isn't a TTC.

It's a term of disparagement, no doubt. Same goes for 'leftist ....' I'll accept it as a TTC.

But being a leftist, I feel can give more compelling arguments against the right, than I can for the left ( there are some hard left stuff I don't agree with, for sure). "Liberal' is often used by the right in a disparaging tone. 'conservative' does not carry the same weight of disparagement as does 'liberal' does, given the far more negative use the right attributes to it.

No, those are not TTCs. Commonality, nor using a common term in a disparaging term, per se, doesn't equal 'thought-terminating.

I'm not finding anything on the left that is more blatantly thought terminating than 'TDS' or 'Fake news'.

Neither terms invite further discussion, they are attempts to kill it. Especially TDS.

that is the right's primo TTC. it has all the qualities of a TTC,

1. It's coined, there is no such thing in any psyche reference, or med reference book.
2. As an imagined 'syndrome' it is saying there is no point in discussing the issue further, as the person perceived to have it is 'obsessed' to the point of being deranged, and thus is not rational. But, the TTC is not rational -- those of us on the left have contempt, not hatred, for Trump because of things he's done, thing's he said, and his general stupidity and inability to speak in a coherent, fluid, fashion. There is a reason we feel the way we do about Trump, where TDS implies irrationality, and, as such, is false.

Now the left has some disparaging terms, but nothing as thought-terminating, dissent killing, critical thinking blocking, as that one.

I commend the right for thinking of it, but, of course, use of it is an aberration of logic. There simply is no such thing, but in the minds of the right. I could have said

MAGA morons,
Right wingers
Etc. Those could be TTC, but they still do not curb/kill/block like TDS does.
