Republicans need Chuck Hagel

Over at FP.com Cypress posted a link to Esquire Magazines recent interview with Chuck Hagel... where he says basically there is enough to Impeach Bush.

http://www.esquire.com/features/chuckhagel0407 Wow!

I do like this guy ...

Hagel needs to assert himself as a Leader and do the right thing... round up the Conservative/Libertarian wing of the Republican Party and call for Bush and Cheney to resign ... iow..save the damn party from itself.
become the Barry Goldwater of the year 2007.

I found another good article on Hagel... supporting my belief that partisans like Dixie become so damn transparent when they condemn a Man like Hagel for speaking truths....

I'd support that.

Do you support it because Nancy would take over... or do you support it to save the life of the Republican Party.. thus..save the life of our system of checks and balances?

Im a long run person... Id be willing to relinquish short term power to the Democratic Party in order to preserve the integrity of the other....

You know that they wouldn't resign at the same time, even if this happened. Cheney would resign, a new VP would be appointed, then the Pres would resign, the VP would take over, another new VP would be appointed and approved by the Senate.

I would support it because we need to set a precident, and if you lie us into war on trumped up intelegence you should be impeached.

It would be good for the Republican party to lead an effort to set this precidense but they wont. I have no problem with traditional limited government not social conservatives. I can understand the argument for smaller government and less taxes. I respect that argument. I cant understand the argument for government in our private lives and governmetn in the bedrooms. I cannot respect social conservatives.

I dont think lying us into a war is based on any party position, I dont blame the Republicans for that except for the fact that they elected Bush in 2004.

Woowoowoo ... Yet you respect Social Democrats? Those that wish to monitor speech? Remove the right to use legal products in a Private Business Establishment? This is where you loose me.... not being able to recognize Social Fascism within your own ranks.

But I agree with you and Damo.. it'll never happen.... as much as I think it should.

Good point.. but if it did happen they both would need to go...

Maybe that what Cheney's blood clot is all about..... an excuse to resign.. preventative maintenance ... just in case the unthinkable does happen.

Depending on the issue, I disagree with the Democrats sometimes on the issues you brought up.

I dont like Hate Crimes, I dont know what you are talking about when you say Democrats want to monitor speech?? As far as banning smoking, here in Florida it was a constitutional amendment that the people voted on, not particularly supported by one party or another.

The Esquire piece is a beautiful piece of writing, kudos to the author.

"There were two reasons I did it," Chuck Hagel explains. "I believed what the administration said, that war would be a last resort, and the second thing is, at a critical time like this, the president needs a strong hand, and to some extent, you've got to trust him, until he lies or screws up or something. Is there a gamble in that? Sure. But there was a gamble in sending Hagel to the Senate."

It’s terribly sad that certain Democrats couldn’t give this answer, years ago. Had Kerry said it, he might be President today, hard to say, but I wouldn’t be surprised. I hope one of them can figure Iraq out, because regardless of whether or not I respect Hagel (I do), he’s a conservative, 100%. And that would mean four more years of bad fiscal and social policy, bad labor and consumer policy, and crazy judges.

What is really interesting is, if you look real closely at these polls on Iraq, Hagel couldn’t win the primary. No way. They still support the damned war. I guess that could change, but you know what, if these people haven’t turned yet, what would it take? So that would mean an Independent run. What if he ran with a Democrat on the ticket? I think that 08 could be the most interesting election year this country has ever seen, and we’ve had some interesting and historic ones. I look forward to it.

I think it is. I predicted he'd have some sort of "health issue" in this year that will cause him to resign so that they can place their new and upcoming neo-con into that spot to run in the next election.

Hopefully a nice Western Republican will kick whomever's butt in the Primary and we'll have a shot. I've been liking Hagel. But I think that if the surge has any success Hagel's chance is shot. I'd prefer the surge to work, not because it helps Bush, but because I don't like failure.

A Western Republican would be 1000x's better than what weve got. Id be happy as a clam, im sure Id disagree with him sometimes... but Id like it. I dont think Cheney is going anywhere however. Bush is too loyal and joining his administration for any canidate would NOT help his chances at getting elected, it may help some lesser known at getting the R nomination.

Yep Repubs need Hagel, but they don't seem to be smart enough to realize that.
I hope they nominate MCcain and Romney. Dems can easially beat either of those.

I think thats true, if the Religous right supports someone other than the Republicans or they stay home, the Democrat will be the president.

Who do you think his VP pick would be, if the blood clot story is the beginning of just this scenario? (which I don’t think is far-fetched at all). Everyone says it would be Rice. Maybe at one time, but I just can’t see that happening now.

I dont buy that this is the plan, however if Cheney died tomorrow of a Hart Attack, Rice might be the only one willing to do it.

I dont think she wants to be president, any presidental canidate would be very reluctant to join this administration. Mark my words, all canidates will be attempting to distance themselves from this administration as much as possable come next September-October and Early November.

Bush could get cudos for the Republican party by having the first black and woman VP, this could take some thunder from Senators Clinton and Obama!

If it is, it would be because they believe that Obama is going to get the nod from the Ds...

I don't think she wants to give it a shot. She might end up as the VP candidate after the Primaries are done though. Seriously.

I have no idea who they think would be good in that spot, but if they want to keep "control" of the party it would be their only chance. I don't think they can at this point in time though.

I agree she is too close to Bush and this war.

However she has two powerfull attributes that would help her deflate whats appealing about the Democratic frontrunners...

She is a woman and she is african-american.

I think the bush stench is too great for those political positives to overcome. She has been a VERY loyal Bushite.

George Pataki.. because History does repeat itself ..and he wants to be President but cant drum up any support. This will be his in ... ever so slight it is...
I dont beieve the administration would want to change SS at this juncture in time.. it wouldnt be wise, although one could never accuse this Administration of being wise ... ;)
