Ok. The space force is a branch of the military that the federal govt has authority to maintain. The dept of education is not a branch of the military.

If not...then it gets its authority for a Dept. Education from the same place as it gets the authority for NASA.

Or any of the other non-military departments that have been created.

Governments find themselves having to set rules and regulations so that anarchy and chaos are not the standard. Some governments is needed for Interior matters, some for food standards, some for communications, some for air travel...commerce...etc.

Education also.

The federal government has very limited authority. It does far more than it has authority to. All things you mentioned need not be done by the federal government. They have no authority to do it. Plain and simple.
 
Maybe we should abolish the Department of Education. The reasons supporting that, in part, are:

Education is clearly not an interstate function making it purely a state issue. There is no reason or need for federal intervention in education.

The Department of Education does a really shitty job. That's a provable fact.

Now, let me inject one more thing in here to start a shitstorm of ad hominem and insults from the Left. I believe one of the biggest problems with K-12 education is the inequity in teachers by gender. Today in the US, something around 85% of all K-12 public education teachers and administrators are female. If that were the other way around, the Left would be screaming up a storm of protest. But it isn't.
The Left is silent--SILENT!--on this issue. I would suggest if the number of men in education were far greater, and the distribution of teaching jobs were more balanced by gender, we'd have a better education outcome than we do. Of course, don't expect the woke federal Department of Education to do anything about that either, it's just one more thing they've fucked up entirely.

Abolishing the DoEd would be a good thing.
