Democrats have been trying to raise the marriage and consent ages up to 18.

It is creepy that in some parts of America, a girl can be forced to marry an adult, that adult becomes her guardian, and she cannot divorce that adult without his consent. He gets to literally decide for her whether she wants to apply for a divorce.

I cannot do anything about how children were treated in the distant past, and not much about how they are treated in foreign countries, but I can damn sure oppose them being molested in my country and in my time. This defense of child abuse that it was done in the past, or that it is done in some foreign country means nothing to me. It should be illegal here and now.

The age of marriage in the Catholic Church is 14, but it is allowed to go younger with permission from the Church. In many Protestant Churches it is even lower, or nonexistent.

It is really the civil authorities that have pushed up age of marriage.
