It works for me that the Enlightenment was when the mistake was made, was the original sin, but it was WW1 when the masses figured it out.

Not true. While some scientists were either atheist or believers in the Church of No God, many others were devout Christians, including Galileo, Kepler, DesCartes, and Copernicus.
