Did not care for his politics when he was Speaker but now he seems the very voice of reason. Therefore, his name shall be called RINO and he shall be scorned and mocked -- by his own party.

Politics is supposed to be about ideas, principles and policies, and it should be aspirational and optimistic. We’ve gone in the opposite direction. Politics has become more performance art than persuasion. My side of the aisle, the people who do well these days are the people who do culture-war politics. Culture-war politics can get you your vote coalition, but it requires that you play identity politics, and identity politics is immoral. It is by definition divisive. If you can divide an electorate so that you get 50-plus-1 percent, you can win an election, but the other 49 percent hate you, and it’s not how I think democracies will survive in the 21st century. It makes it harder for our politics to be unifying.

This is the fascinating part of this thread to me

I have a few questions but you won't answer because you and too few leftists actually want to discuss ideas and principles and policies.

For decades, liberals have consistently embraced the principles of universal health care, social security, minimum wage, labor rights, environmental protection.

Meanwhile Rightwingers bounce around wildly between the outrage du jour: school prayer, banning gay marriage, banning Sharia law, wars on Christmas, CRT, wokeism.

Each outrage du jour lasts about ten months, and then we barely ever hear about it again

Yep. At any rate, it was a well-written interview. I still disagree with Ryan's politics, particularly the supply-side nonsense. But at least he's sane. Which of course is why his future in politics is limited. The QOP runs from sanity like a vampire from the Sun.

The Party of Trump is, indeed, insane, but I think those with money who are supporting Republicans understand that insanity costs them money.

MAGATs were bombarded for four years about how great the Trump economy supposedly was. Now Fox and other Reichwing sites are bombarding them with crap about how abysmal the Biden economy is. Neither are true, but since they steadfastly refuse to seek info from anything other than blatantly-biased sources, they refuse to believe it.

How someone like Ryan thinks that this can be changed w/o forcing information sites into reporting actual facts is puzzling.

Notice that the only people who believe Trumpian bullshit are the idiots and the psychos, neither of which are sitting on most corporate boards across the country.

That's pretty much right. So what do you think they will do if #TRE45ON gets the (R) nomination? Start moving all their billions to offshore havens? I can't see them donating to any (D) candidates.

I doubt Trump will get it for that reason. Note that Trump will have to start spending his own money for his campaign, something he is loathe to do, since the big corporate sponsors are looking at other Republicans.

This doesn't even address Trump's legal problems.
