(CNN) -- Filmmaker Roman Polanski has been arrested on an arrest warrant stemming from a decades-old sex charge, Swiss police said Sunday.

The Academy Award-winning director pleaded guilty in 1977 to a single count of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, acknowledging he had sex with a 13-year-old girl, but fled the United States before he could be sentenced. U.S. authorities issued a warrant for his arrest in 1978.

He was taken into custody trying to enter Switzerland on Saturday, Zurich police said.

Polanski, 76, has lived in France for decades to avoid being arrested if he enters the U.S. He declined to collect his Academy Award for Best Director in person when he won it for "The Pianist" in 2003.

Prosecutors have consistently argued that it would be a miscarriage of justice to allow a man to go free who "drugged and raped a 13-year-old child."

Apparently this is okay in France where they have protected him for decades.

about time....

Frances constitution doesn't allow extradition of French citizens to other countries. They were still supposed to charge and sentence him as if the crime had happened in France, though, which apparently they didn't do.

They've allowed Polanski to "go free" for decades. He's travelled around europe at will, and if the US was ever serious about sending him to prison we could have done that DECADES ago when he was much younger and his encarceration would have impacted his life much more dramatically.

I suspect this is nothing more than theatre.

I recognize how much the right loves to hate France .. but perhaps you should do a bit of thinking before accussing France of lower moral standards when it comes to child-rape.

Our celebrities simply pay the victim to shut up.

Most US child rape victims are raped by their relatives.

Catholic priests have been getting a pass on raping children since the beginning of time.

Ever been to Utah?

Should Polanski been sent jail for his crime? .. absolutely .. but 32 years later .. give me a break.

I don't think that 32 years later makes what he pleaded guilty to any better, he should have been in prison for the past 32 years, but now is good too.

And yes, it seems if you are celebrity France won't even do what their constitution requires of them...

And talking about that takes nothing from Priests. The equivalence is a non sequitur based on your knee-jerk reaction to protect what you think of as "democratic socialists" from any form of criticism.

for the record, the actual girl that he had sex with is asking for the charges to be dropped and for everyone to move on

DEEPLY stupid my friend.

France being democratically socialist never entered my mind.

Polanski is not charged with any crime in France .. and France has a long history of resisting US prosecution ..

In fact, during the reign of terror of George Bush, much of europe grew a distaste for extrdicting people to insane US jurisdiction where "terror" suspects are shipped off for torture.

Right, it never entered your mind, hence the "knee-jerk" portion of my statement. I realize it didn't enter your mind, but you have a need to defend them no matter how ridiculous or unwarranted the defense may be.

Per France's constitution they are not to extradite a citizen, but they may try the person in France as if the crime had been committed there (considering his guilty plea the trial wouldn't have lasted long). As I stated, they didn't even follow their own constitution, or at least deemed this crime as no consequence. And this happened long before "Bush's reign of terror," your excuses are weak and easily dismissed. You attempt to distract and misinform.

Look deep, my friend, there really is nothing to defend here. France should have done the right thing and put an admitted child rapist in prison.

Wow what does Bush have to do with this? Nice deflection attempt though. LOL

I'm not sure the law requires them to prosecute. The prosecutor would make the final decision regardless.

Obviously language is a problem for you here brother.

" .. but they MAY try the person in France as if the crime had been committed there"

Not doing the "MAY" is not a violation of their constitution .. quite obviously.

Any clue as to how many criminals the US wouldn't extradite to other countries, or the crimes they were accused of?

Why should France do what we tell them?
