When she probably would've been fine if she had just stuck to dog-whistling about Muslims, and the real issue was her comparing Valerie's bloodline to the Planet of the Apes. She only issued a generic apology (clearly written by her PR agent) several hours after the fact, when she realized she had put herself in danger of getting axed.

She waited several hours to apologize. Honestly if she had clarified immediately afterward that the comment was only in respect to Valerie's individual looks, she probably would've gotten off. But she was like, "Islam is not a race!" A stupid comment because Valerie is not even Muslim (she was born in Iran to a charity doctor in a time when Iran was our ally, that doesn't make her a Muslim), and shows she apparently didn't even care about the obvious problems with the comparison of an african american to an ape.
