The announcement from the Pentagon's biggest supplier came just hours after Washington was rocked by the surprise resignation of General David Petraeus as director of the Central Intelligence Agency after admitting an extramarital affair.
Kubasik, Lockheed's 51-year-old president and vice chairman, had been due to take over from Bob Stevens. Instead, the company said Marillyn Hewson, a Lockheed veteran who was slated to become operating chief in January, will take over as CEO on Jan. 1.
Stevens said Kubasik, who is married, had conducted a "lengthy, close personal relationship" with a subordinate, who has since left the company. On a call with reporters, Stevens said the relationship came to light two weeks ago from an internal whistleblower.
"I regret that my conduct in this matter did not meet the standards to which I have always held myself," Kubasik said in a statement. He couldn't be reached for further comment.
