While I've made some by dissolving gasoline in Styrofoam, the most common additive is used motor oil. I like about 1/3 oil to 2/3 gas. Make sure the fuel doesn't leak out the top when lit because it will go all over the thrower. Throwing from a rooftop is better than from the ground simply because it gives more advantage for distance and allows the thrower to remain unseen.

Back in the 80s, Field & Stream magazine would have a back page detailing some kind of hunting or fishing tip. One I recalled was "How to make your own duck ponds".

It detailed how you could take a 50 lb back of ammonium nitrate, lay it flat over selected spot for pond, cut a large X in the top of the bag and dump a quart of motor oil in it. Let the fertilizer absorb for a bit then stick in a blasting cap (available from any hardware store), light it and run.

I miss those days.
