It's a long process, Turkey gave up, Bulgaria and Romania whilst accepted in 2004 didn't have full access till 2014. They have to meet strict fiscal criteria which is why Scotland has very little chance of joining.

This is the problem with America, there is no room for debate. Democrats say that Putin has invaded Ukraine, and there are school shootings. Republicans say that is all fake news. Republicans say the problems are alien clones, and Jewish space lasers starting fires. There is no overlap here. The "facts" we are starting from is so far apart that debate becomes pointless.

You are mistaken. Bulgaria and Romania became members in 2007. So it started in 2004, and they were members in 2007. Once they were members, it became unavoidable that they would get full rights to move to other EU members, but those rights took 7 years to come about. Ukrainians already have those rights (on a temporary basis).

Technically speaking, after 60 years, Turkey is still a candidate. No one has had the heart to tell Turkey it will never happen, and Turkey is unwilling to totally give up.

Scotland was already in the EU, so could join. It would take time. The EU is not happy about Brexit.

You know that only part of Donbas is occupied by Putin, and most of the rest of Russian speaking Ukraine is not occupied. For instance, Odessa is a Russian speaking city, where Russian is known by far more of the population than Ukrainian, but it has fought tooth and nail against the Russians.

We just need the current war to end, and all sorts of great things are possible. Those great things will hurt Putin, so that is another reason for him not to end the war.
