A high school artist was chosen to paint a mural. Then came the outrage

A mural painted by a high school student came under fire when parents alleged it was promoting LGBTQ imagery and witchcraft.

Earlier this year, a Grant, Michigan, high school sophomore won a contest “to brighten up” the middle school health center, according to a statement from Grant Public Schools (GPS). GPS says the student received approval to paint images of “smiling children” and as well as the message “Stay Healthy.”

In the painting, there are three children. A boy is seen in a light blue, pink and white T-shirt, the colors of the transgender Pride flag. A girl wears pink, royal blue and purple, the colors of the bisexual flag. And a second girl is in rainbow Pride colors.

GPS Superintendent Brett Zuver was a contest judge. He did not respond to an email asking if he understood the meaning of the colors when the student’s design was chosen as the winner. GPS said the final mural included “some features” that were not part of the agreement, including a demon face inspired by a popular video game called Genshin Impact, and a “Hamsa hand,” also known as the Hand of Fatima or Hand of Mary. The palm-shaped design has been a symbol for good luck or protection for centuries in many cultures, including Latin American.

If you asked most people in 1997 if they thought this new, magic-themed children’s novel just published in the UK would become an entire universe, complete with eight movies, a London studio tour experience, a massive amusement park, and more, they probably would have said no. In fact, when Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was first published, many parents and teachers did not want this book in their schools, homes, or libraries. At. All. The book promoted “witchcraft, the occult, and anti-family themes” just to name a few. It was successfully banned from thousands of places. How could this so familiar, childhood staple, much loved book series, go from ban after ban to world-renowned family favorite?

The first Harry Potter book was published in the United States in 1998 and was immediately challenged. Challenging a book means that someone raised the idea that the book should not be readily available for the public audience. After a challenge is voiced at a school, library or bookstore, that entity may choose to ban the book or dismiss the challenge.

Even though it was published at the end of the decade, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone made the list of top 100 challenged books of the decade (1990-1999), ranking at number 48. Of course, the series continued to be challenged into the new millennium where it topped the most frequently challenged list for 2000-2009. Reasons for challenging the book included: glorifying witchcraft, promoting the occult, tones of death, hate, lack of respect and sheer evil, leading children to hatred and rebellion, confusing children, and leading them astray. Some were also concerned about the increasing dark tone in the later books but overall, most of the challengers’ reasons based on religious beliefs. Luckily for us fans, libraries and intellectual freedom fighters fought censorship attempts and eventually overcame them. According to the American Library Association, Harry Potter books are now the most challenged books of the entire 21 st century.

It's a fundamental difference in outlook; Repress vs Freedom of Choice. Your fundie neighbors were repressive assholes and live on in the spirit of JPP White Nationalists.

I wouldn't doubt that for a minute. The guy across the street apparently was in with the KKKers. I was out working in the garden one afternoon when a group of rough-looking guys on motorcycles roared up to his house. They all trooped inside, then one came back out and hung a huge Confederate flag from the cover over the deck. I yelled "Is it time for the Klan meeting? Do you got any spare sheets?" He just stared at me and went back inside. Then they all came back out, took down the flag, and rode off back to hell where they came from. That guy later was arrested for something and we never saw him again.

Lots of White Nationalists are into Meth, both selling and using. I suspect some JPP White Nationalists are mixed up on drugs. It's often how they fund their terrorist activities, weapons and supplies. Eventually they often become users and do stupid shit like try to overthrow the nation and murder Americans.

Oh yeah. This was in rural Missouri, about 70 miles NW of St. Louis. There were meth cookers everywhere there. Our neighbors, who run a 400-acre dairy farm, told us from time to time how they would discover meth-making paraphernalia on their property. They also had incidents where meth makers tried to steal the anhydrous ammonia they used for fertilizer.

I can ignore him without using the ignore function but that would limit my ability to study dementia in elderly Euro-American males.

He, like several others on JPP, are truly pathetic human beings: they are living examples of frightened, lonely old men who do what they've done all their lives - abuse others.

Watching them wallow in their misery and self-created bile should be a lesson to all on the consequences of living an abusive, selfish life.

It's like taking school kids down to the local jail on a Saturday morning and showing them the town drunks. "See, kids? This is not how you want to end up."
