A Georgia high school says that one of the soldiers involved in the mid-air collision was a former student and a member of their MCJROTC program.

After nearly 40 years working in ATC, I have seen similar incidents many times. No crashes but near misses.

I listened to the audio from the controller and his instructions were not precise. He asked the helicopter pilot if he saw the AA plane. He did not specify what runway. The helicopter pilot affirmed that he saw the plane but it appears that he was speaking of a plane departing on another runway.

I have seen several long time aviation experts saying the same thing. Jon Scott on FOX, a pilot, thinks that is what happened.

If true, the controller and the FAA are in deep doo doo.

We will know soon, the NTSB people are among the best at investigating these incidents.
