San Francisco bans Happy Meals

If you don't want the government in your bedroom or into your body, then you better start seeing things from a liberal/conservative viewpoint. Because it will not come from liberals.

Justice Clarence Thomas wrote: "I 'can find [neither in the Bill of Rights nor any other part of the Constitution a] general right of privacy,' or as the Court terms it today, the 'liberty of the person both in its spatial and more transcendent dimensions.'"

Echoing Thomas' so-called conservative perspective, Rush Limbaugh said on his radio program on June 27, 2003, "There is no right to privacy specifically enumerated in the Constitution." Jerry Falwell similarly agreed on Fox News.

If you don't want anyone telling your pregnant wife or daughter what she can and can't do with her uterus, you better start seeing things from a liberal/conservative viewpoint.

Here's the RUB: There is nothing stopping parents in San Francisco from walking into a McDonalds and buying their kid one, one hundred or one thousand Happy Meals.

So, I want you to tell me why McDonalds puts a toy in the Happy Meal.

I've already answered your question several times. It's plain and simple marketing. People have choices of which fast food restaurant they can go to. McDonald's wants them to come to their restaurant so they offer a toy.

WHO is McDonalds targeting with the toy in a Happy Meal?

WHO is McDonalds targeting with the toy in a Happy Meal?

Me; because I like collecting certain ones.

WHO is Peter Piper Pizza targeting with their games and tokens??
WHO is Denny's targeting with their coloring books and the crayons??

I see you're to much of a coward to take me up on the Tofu Burger kids meal.

WHO is McDonalds targeting with the toy in a Happy Meal?

Probably my great grandparents who do you think?

So to sum up the previous two hundred posts you think kids wouldn't eat fast food, wouldn't like hamburgers, fries and soda, if McDonald's didn't offer a toy in their Happy Meal. And of course with that other fast food restaurants such as Jack in the Box, Carl's Jr. Wendy's etc. that don't offer toys wouldn't attract kids and get them to like hamburgers, fries and sodas if McDonald's hadn't put a toy in their Happy Meal.

WHO is McDonalds targeting with the toy in a Happy Meal?
Whats your point again ?

Who is Hasbro targeting with their ads at Christmas time?
Who is ToyRUs targeting with their ads....

Whats your problem Charlie Chan......you want to remove all commercials that appeal to tots, pre-teens? How about teenagers, no ads aimed at them either?
How about bra commercials....you think they're sexist.....
Are KFC ads racist?

Are you on medication?

I didn't say that, YOU did, and all the tantrum throwers that have turned this onto the end of America. The same ones that will tell your daughter she doesn't own her uterus, THEY do.

I said it will have little effect on addressing childhood obesity. The truth is no one from government is stopping kids or parents from buying a Happy Meal. So all these 'adults' have their panties soiled over a fucking TOY.

I mean if you really want to delve into this lets look at some other things the government should step in and regulate.

1) sugar cereals that offer toys - again using the toy as the hook, i think most of us would agree that eating cheerios and wheaties would be healthier for kids than sugar cereals

2) playgrounds at fast food restaurants - those obviously appeal to kids or even some adults who maybe think letting their kids play gives them a rest but at the expense of having their children eat unhealthy food.

3) sodas - again I think most would agree there is little reedeming health value in sodas, wouldn't ban them outright but maybe their advertising/sponsoring kids movies or ads like Mean Joe Green and the little kid (old school ad yes I know) that appeal to the youth

I think we could find a lot more but this would be a good start.

Untrue.
It's you and the rest of the Banana Republic of San Fran that are shitting their nappies over a fucking toy.
Now go get your nanny state to change and powder your ass.

I'm sorry you see disagreeing with this legislation as throwing a tantrum but to each his own.

For those us who disagree it is a matter of principle about government once again involving itself with feel good legislation in an area that is a parents responsibility.

You make very good points. The first step to addressing the obesity epidemic is acknowledging that it exists, then being willing to do something about it. And in some cases, being willing to deny kids the 'hooks' used to influence their behavior.

If I were an executive at McDonalds, I would put together a healthy meal, package THAT with a toy, and entice the parents to buy it for their kids. It would be the best way for McDonalds to turn this into a win/win. But I'm a liberal, so I don't know anything about the 'market'

I played and coached sports all my life. When I was a kid, we played baseball everyday in the summer, football in the fall, hockey in the winter and basketball throughout the year. My mother had to drag me into the house.

I pedaled my little ass wherever I needed to go, or walked.

Here is one of my pet peeves...

I don't disagree that child obesity is a problem and something we need to address and I think people have started to already. I don't agree though about the role the government should play. The government cannot not be the parents of all children. It is up to the parents to be mothers and fathers to their children.

Please...we ARE the government. There is a lunacy taking over this country. Keep in mind this trivial detail; our founding fathers created a GOVERNMENT.

So you want US to tell you how to raise your children/Grand children?

No I don't. But do you want the government to cease inspection and regulation of our food supply? You can pack up the car and send the wife on a trip to the bowels of Georgia to try to inspect a Peanut Corp. of America plant before you give the kids cookies and snacks with peanut butter. She will be denied access to the plant and she will probably be arrested if she presses the issue, hope you have bail money set aside.

Unsanitary Conditions Found in Peanut Plant

Inspection reports of a Georgia peanut processing plant at the center of a massive, nationwide salmonella outbreak indicate that the company operated in unsanitary conditions and knowingly shipped products contaminated with strains of salmonella.

So far, more than 500 people in 43 states have become ill because of the outbreak. In response, the Food and Drug Administration has ordered one of the largest food recalls in history, asking the public to throw out every product made by the Peanut Corporation of America over the past two years. The Lynchburg, Va.-based company knowingly shipped out salmonella-laced products at least a dozen times in 2007 and 2008, authorities say; at least one congressman has asked for a criminal investigation by the Justice Department.

Among the highlights of the reports released yesterday:

* A sink in one of the peanut butter rooms was used interchangeably to clean hands and utensils and to wash out mops.

* The "wash room" was found to be a veritable horror show of problems: a "slimy, black-brown residue," identified as mold, was found on a conveyor and on the walls; a live cockroach and several of his dead compatriots were also discovered.

* The company's cooler room also had mold on the ceiling and walls. Inspectors spotted water stains leading down to where finished product was stored.

* An ingredient staging area was found "dirty with a heavy build-up of different powdery ingredients on all exposed surfaces.''

* The lack of a ventilation system at the facility allowed for contamination to occur and officials did not check the effectiveness of temperature, volume and belt speed during the peanut roasting process.

* Bacteria-laden raw peanuts were stored next to roasted peanuts, increasing the risk of contamination, and peanut products were stored next to salmonella-contaminated floors and cracks.

What the hell does this latest rant of yours, have to do with your willingness to allow the Government to ban a company from selling a perfectly legal item??
It is also obvious that while you don't want the Goverment in your business or telling you what to do with your family; but you have no problem in allowing and supporting the opposite, when it comes someone else.

'Perfectly' and 'legal'...is there any better way to describe the mental illness and bankrupt morals and ethics that is known as 'conservatism"? What I have seen happen in this country that I love, is unethical and harmful has become 'lawful'. Not because it is right, but because someone had the money to buy the political clout to write laws. We see lending practices that fit your 'perfectly' and 'legal' that the fucking mafia calls loan sharking and sends their thugs out to stop.

The most important rule of a free market is you can't get rich by making other people poor. If you do so, then it is no longer a free market, it is a captured market or a subsidized market. It becomes the most destructive form of socialism, corporate welfare; the rich stealing from the poor.
