Here convicted felons are not allowed to have anything that can be construed to be a weapon. Maybe a bat.

If convicted that means due process was used. That means they can lose their rights.

once free, they are supposed to retain all of their rights. negating rights of convicts is an unconstitutional means to keep people unarmed and as an unconstitutional means to dissuade people of committing crimes

Well, CA is going to dictate what convicted felons can and cannot have for weapons regardless.

My state is stricter. Yeah, I don't like that, but it's been that way for a long time.

Not at all, but my state says otherwise. There's a lot of guys that got into trouble when they were young, but straightened up and now have families to protect, but they can't have weapons.
