Should Advertisers be able to directly target minors?

The article above brought up this question. Facebook is loosening privacy on kids accounts that are 13-17 so that advertisers can directly target them better.

Just looking for opinions on this...

1) Should advertisers be able to target teens on social networks?

2) Should social networks be loosening privacy standards on minors freely or should it require parental and/or teen consent to do so? (ie... should it be an opt in, vs. opt out thing)

In my opinion, the social networks should not be able to loosen the privacy without consent of at least the teen opting in to such ads, though I would not have a problem with making it parental consent.

As for the advertisers... as the article states, kids are more impressionable and tend to lack impulse control. Given how materialistic our society already is and the non stop barrage teens are already under to be more like the 'Kardashian/Hilton/Hollywood celeb' types... I just think this is going too far. Should we protect the kids from this? Be interested to hear your takes on this.

All of these questions are rhetorical. This is America the bigger the organization the more they can do, they can bring millions of people in like cattle and then change the rules at any time and give, read sell, your personal shit and the ability to contact you personally or otherwise to anyone they want. They don't have to ask anyone's permission and they will pay off any politicians who try to start a row or ruckus over it. They don't care and they are big enough that they don't have to. Capitalism rules all and is beyond discussion. The power in this country accrues to those who with money and helps them make more money. That's why people like Walter Lippman referred to it as Money Power as far back at the depression years. If you don't like it, change the damn system. Otherwise learn to live with it, or become a damn billionaire so you can take the bastards who are pulling this shit to task. Because as things are now the Money Power is the only power there is and unless you can fight it with more power you are pissing in the wind.

It, to me, is just like TV, I pay for cable or record programs so I can skip commercials, I imagine in time FB and other social networks will go this way, you pay to skip the advertiments.

The number of commercials on Saturday morning cartoons are outrageous, but it is Capitalism at its finest!

Well, the major difference is that, as a general matter, you can't make a purchase directly on your television in response to a commercial. That's not the case on the internet. Also, I think where the age of the user is known (as it is on Facebook) content should be restricted.

Thank you, I forgot about that aspect and you have a point, thanks

Looks like someone woke up on the wrong side of Marxism! ;)

Well, you kinda have to. Otherwise you'll get a modern version of Socrates's trial, where we punish people for "corrupting" our youth. The best answer, as a parent, is to not let your kids have a fucking facebook to begin with.

How come the Great Ignorer keeps posting in my threads?

Should I consider threadbanning him?
