Should Advertisers be able to directly target minors?

Well, you kinda have to. Otherwise you'll get a modern version of Socrates's trial, where we punish people for "corrupting" our youth. The best answer, as a parent, is to not let your kids have a fucking facebook to begin with.

So you don't think they should have an opt in (or at least an opt out) feature for minors?

Should they be able to loosen privacy on minors solely to be able to advertise to them?

You make a valid point, but I think the loosening of privacy standards just to benefit advertisers is going over the line.

I think he was referring to normal commercials rather than infomercials.
sure. I have kids calling in, I won't make the sale even if they have a CCard; unless I talk to a guardian/parent.

Online is much more dificult to police, not sure it can, and the "keyword" advertising isn't going to stop.

Man, do I agree with that! Let them be squares, it is better than their jumping to their deaths or other problems these networks accounts create. I remember being the worst parent ever for not letting my kid have a pager! Lol

I understand advertising isn't going to stop. Nor can we stop on line purchases. I guess my biggest problem with the story is that Facebook deliberately loosened their privacy standards for teens... just so advertisers could target them. That simply seems wrong to me.

So you're going to advocate...what, exactly?

make it a law they cannot sell minors info
Pretty easy to see if they loosen privacy standards for minors... especially when articles are written on said topic.
how do they detrmine whom is a minor?
It's asking too much enforcement for a social network, at some point the parents have to be in charge

OK missed this, so they KNOW whom is a teen?

This law wouldn't have a chilling effect, would it?

How would it be worded to pass constitutional muster?

Would it pass Congress?

Would Obama sign it?

How would enforcement be handled?

I think they should yeah, but as a matter of law, no.

Like I said, kids shouldn't have this shit. It involves some parenting (coming from a man who has no children).

Should Advertisers be able to directly target minors? Only with a 30.06! Hrrumph.
