Should Musk/trump raise the retirement age?

Walt

Back To Reality
In 1983, it was decided to raise the retirement age by 2 months for every year born, until it reached 67 for people born in 1960. So people born in 1960 will reach full retirement age in 2027. This seemed like a reasonable deal, given that life expectancies were rising by an average of 3.5 months per year back in 1983.

Life expectancies are rising by a current average of 12 days per year, and look set to start decreasing. So talking about raising retirement age now would mean a double whammy of losing time in retirement.

And there would be no time to plan around it. The 1983 plan gave people 25 years to plan around a 2 month increase in retirement age.

If Musk/trump continues the increases for people born after 1960, they will have only 2 or 3 years to plan around an increase in retirement age.

And now if trump puts the tariffs on imports like he says he is going to that will raise " inflation " ( cost of goods we buy ) and people that are on SS will get COLA increases and that will drive the SS system into insolvency sooner.
So raising prices of imported goods will drive up costs then people on SS will need an increase in COLA , it will be a big cluster fuck.
And seeing they fucked things up they will have to figure out how to fix it.
And Trump will say OH the SS system is in a fucked up mess and I had to fix it, even if he was the one that fucked it up.

No. Cut govt spending in half

No. Cut govt spending in half
trump might be able to cut Social Security in half. If he chains COLA, so that it does not rise with inflation, and combines that with high inflation, that could cut inflation adjusted Social Security in half. It would be brutal, but doable.

Raising the edge of retirement would not do that. There are too many people already retired.

Always believed it should be somehow means tested, if he retired today, Trump would get social security payments

And what is really sad is if one is relying on SS as their main means of support, which I believe many are, they are in for a sad discovery

It's likely headed that way. A combination of increase the retirement age, increase taxes and means testing. There's no way to deal with this without everyone feeling some type of pain so to speak.

Edit: You reference Trump. Why him specifically? Should well to do people who paid into S.S. all their lives not receive any of it? (not attacking you, just asking)

I would have thought increasing the retirement age was a given, but “Walt’s” topic thread above raises additional considerations. In the end, it will half to happen

I don’t know how one arrives at means testing, although it is needed, because those making substantial incomes aren’t likely to fully retire now

Don’t know, it is a quagmire, but has to be done, and I do not think privatizing it is the solution, would only result in a whole new class of homeless OBGs

And I threw in Trump as the example cause the majority of posters on this form only relate to Trump

Right now if we do nothing, in 2034 benefits will be cut by 20 - 25%.

I'm no expert on this but I've read enough to know there's no simple one thing we can do alone answer that will solve this. Raising taxes alone won't solve it. Means testing alone won't solve it. Raising retirement age alone won't solve this.

I agree with you about the idea of means testing. But it's also easier said than done. And i know one pushback I've heard to means testing is it makes it more of an actual entitlement/welfare program and the fear is people in the future will be less likely to fight for it.

Safe to say there's no easy answer and there will be pain all around.

watching the shit stains be upset that a private citizen speaks freely is hilarious

boo hoo - president elect Musk. waaah. waaaah.

the next 4 years are going to be so amazing.

We should eliminate the concept of "retirement" in America altogether. Americans have it too good as it is. Sure we're rich but we could be richer. If people were only willing to do the hard work the billionaires demand.

Look, as someone gets older they're probably not going to do the job as well, so we can either have companies PAY THEM LESS or we can let the companies FIRE them and let them figure out how to get money for food etc. on their own. That's what America is all about. Hard work = SUCCESS.

We should also eliminate medicare. Socialism has only ever hurt people.

in the industrial revolution it became much more economical for us to live.

the information revolution should of seen even more amazing reductions in the burden required to live. yet thanks to you fucking idiots - we have experienced the opposite. we have to work harder and longer

you blame rich people - but the truth is it is government inefficiency is to blame. you are the problem.

Let's make it 100%! If we want to make AMERICA GREAT AGAIN some belt-tightening is going to be needed. And who better to do it than those who are less able to provide goods and services to our economy?

If we let slackers get shit for FREE then soon NO ONE WILL WORK. EVERYONE will want to live on subsistence aid.

We can't possibly consider raising taxes unless it's on the losers at the bottom who often currently pay NOTHING. The billionaires are doing their job by making jobs for the loser "worker" and giving them the jobs out of the goodness of their hearts. They can't be expected do any more for these loser teat-suckers. The billionaires are GIVING US WHAT THEY CAN...at some point WE HAVE TO DO SOME OF THE LIFTING AS WELL!

I agree with you about the idea of means testing.

(As a serious aside: I can see a value to means testing, but as someone who has had a reasonably good career and who is looking forward to enjoying the safety system I paid into for my entire time, it's scary to consider. As you get closer to retirement you realize you are jumping out of the plane and you HOPE AND PRAY the parachute you cobbled together over the last 50 years holds up all the way to the ground)

But it's also easier said than done. And i know one pushback I've heard to means testing is it makes it more of an actual entitlement/welfare program and the fear is people in the future will be less likely to fight for it.

Because if there's ONE THING Americans LOATHE it is the idea that SOMEONE somewhere MIGHT get something they didn't EARN.

Safe to say there's no easy answer and there will be pain all around.

There will be pain, but honestly it doesn't have to be that bad. We have available to us untold TRILLIONS of dollars if we are willing to go back to the kind of tax structure we had in the 1950's when a family could be supported NICELY on a single salary.

We are being FUCKED by the rich and powerful. And then we're told it's TOO HARD TO FIX. YOU GUYS are gonna have to hurt some.

But the rich never do. You could take half of Musk's wealth and he'd still be about the richest human on earth. Why can't we tax people like a DECENT SOCIETY????

Oh I forgot: Americans HATE Americans more than anyone else.

It needs to be done, but it will be very unpopular, so I doubt it.

No. It does NOT need to be done. There's literally NO REASON. We have access to untapped TRILLIONS of dollars if we only started taxing the wealthy and corporations like a RATIONAL COUNTRY.

We act as if ultrawealthy greed and avarice are somehow not only NORMAL but a VIRTUE.

This has GOT to stop.

Ok, one of those two things need to be done.

Any example(s) of rational countries you think we should be following in this regard?
