Should tasers be banned for law enforcement?

In alot of message boards I have read bleeding hearts cry that the officer should have used the taser instead of shooting the violator...ya can't have it both ways!
And even if the taser is used properly there is no guarantee that the person tased will not suffer a deleterious medical effect...!

Exactly right. I can't speak for anywhere else but I do know there here in Oz there is some confusion about the conventionally accepted use for force continuum. When I was first trained in it we used the US model, I think it was from the FBI, it was a sensible, straighforward, linear model. But it allowed that you could go backwards as well as forwards. It still makes sense to me. But someone here invented a circular model and that's where the confusion starts.

Anyway, UOF continua models are only for police department management to cover their arses when a copper has to use force.

To address your point - the taser is NOT a replacement for the firearm, and you've pointed out that misconception in your post.

But I get bloody angry when I see coppers using a taser as a replacement for simple hands on force or even voice commands.

It's lazy, it's possibly cowardly and I'm pretty sure it's an unreasonable use of force.

The taser is supposed to be somewhere between OC spray (and everything that comes before) and the use of the firearm.
