The founders experienced tyranny and oppression at the hands of their governments. Their knowledge of history also included these acts perpetrated upon others by their governments. In order to maintain their own personal freedom, they believed they had a natural right to these items to defend themselves against their government. When you limit the government to shotguns and revolvers, only then will we consider those items as 'adequate'.

Yes, they could have. In fact, they were given multiple chances to treat the Colonialists as British citizens. Declaring independence was a last resort.
