apparently, we are loaning the Brazilians up to $2 billion dollars.....so they can set up off shore drilling rigs and sell us oil.....

it's a shame that we can't even let American oil companies drill for our own oil, yet we can send taxpayer money elsewhere to do it.....

The U.S. is going to lend billions of dollars to Brazil's state-owned oil company, Petrobras, to finance exploration of the huge offshore discovery in Brazil's Tupi oil field in the Santos Basin near Rio de Janeiro. Brazil's planning minister confirmed that White House National Security Adviser James Jones met this month with Brazilian officials to talk about the loan.

We're fighting global warming by investing in Brazilian oil instead of green technologies.
Exactly. Only oil wells and carbon emission in the US are bad. Meanwhile Brazil is unlikely to be as environmentally sensitive when extracting that oil.

It's really not partisan poltical issue PiMP so much as it is the NIMBY mentality (Not In My Back Yard). The citizens of coastal states, both conservative and liberal, do not want off-shore oil drilling operations that would negatively impact the value of their property. I know this was a big issue in South Carolina and the predominantly conservative property owners on the coast do not want oil drilling on their off-shore water.

The fact of the matter is that the US Export-Import Bank is simply loaning money to Brazil so they can purchase American made equipment and materials in pursuing their off-shore oil exploration activities.

That's what the export-import bank does, finances the purchase of American goods and services by other countries.

correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see the word "partisan" anywhere in any of my posts.....and the question isn't limited to off shore drilling....Alaska is ready to permit drilling at ANWAR, and Colorado and Montana would love to see development of shale oil supplies there.....I believe Florida is also on record as being willing to permit more offshore drilling......

be that as it may, pretending this is merely a NIMBY issue, when there is a federal ban on the procedure is disingenuous.....

The Bush administration tried lifting the ban. Guess who howled the the hardest and the longest?
