Souls to the Polls? Not in Texas

A long-standing tradition in the black community of voting after church services is, of course, coming under assault by the racist Texas Republican legislature. Among the disgusting and transparent provisions in the proposed legislation, this stands as the best example of exactly what Republicans are trying to prevent...... black voting.

"The legislation requires more counties to offer at least 12 hours of early voting each weekday of the last week of early voting, but sets a new window of 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. for voting. This would directly preempt Harris County’s 24-hour voting, which it planned to keep for future elections. It would also slightly shorten the extra hours other large counties offered in the last election by keeping their polling places open until 10 p.m. — three hours past the usual 7 p.m. closing time — for at least a few days.

The draft also sets a new window for early voting on Sundays, limiting it from 1 to 9 p.m."

Why has the GOP become a party of treasonous, racist scumbags?

What is the justification for cutting polling hours? What's the push to shorten them especially in large counties/urban areas? Could it have anything to do with how those areas usually vote?

There is none. They looked at voting practices that are favored in black communities and got rid of them. It really isn't more complicated than that.

Yes. That was intentionally changed from all day Sunday voting. To avoid the times when people go to church.

Dumb Fuck.

So vote after church! They have 8 goddamn hours on Sunday to accomplish that 5 min act!

8 hours is a full work day

If black can make it on time for church . they can make it on time to vote..or do u think they are unable to accomplish this feat ?

So, why change it from all day (9-9) to 1-9. Easy. Because black churches used Sunday mornings to early vote. And you racist scumbags don't want black people to vote. See how easy that was?

They vote AT church?

If they can go to church and go to the mini mart to buy beer...they can go vote between 1 and 9...no one is stopping them from voting

Cutting hours at the end of the day disadvantages lower-income people who tend to have shift jobs and non-9 to 5 jobs.

"Sunday voting is especially important for congregants in Black churches, which regularly hold "souls to the polls" events after Sunday services.

"We gather in our churches on Sunday morning, you have morning worship and then after the service you get on the church buses, church vans, get in cars and people go to vote," says Bishop Reginald T. Jackson of the Sixth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Jackson is the presiding prelate over more than 500 churches in Georgia."

Not all churches get out at noon, or 12:30pm.

No, they vote after church. They all go together. It's a long standing tradition. Republicans are terrified of black people voting. You are a racist scumbag.

Of course. The argument is stupid. Hey, I have an idea. Let's put all polling places in inner cities. Those farmers will just have to figure out how to get there. If they buy their tractors and seed, they can find a way to vote. We'll have voting hours form 5-9 A.M. What, that's the most important time of day on the farm? Too bad.

Bingo.

The polls being closed? Maybe that. Put more succinctly, what is stopping them from doing that is racist scumbags like you.

Thanks, for asking.

Yes, 1 P.M. is after services. So is 3 A.M. on Monday morning.
