Stanford University President Marc Tessier-Lavigne announced Wednesday he will resign after an investigative report found he had failed to correct mistakes in years-old scientific papers and overseen labs that had an “unusual frequency” of manipulations of data.

But the review provides a portrait of a scientist who co-authored papers with “serious flaws” and failed on multiple occasions to “decisively and forthrightly correct mistakes” when concerns were raised. Tessier-Lavigne said Wednesday that he would ask for three papers to be retracted and two corrected. A panel of prominent scientists, engaged by a special committee of the private university’s board of trustees, examined a dozen of the more than 200 papers published during his career.

Other education news: Wesleyan University Ends Legacy Admissions

Wesleyan University, a liberal arts college in Connecticut, is ending legacy admissions, which give a leg up to the children of alumni, just weeks after the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action.

Some highly selective universities and colleges have dropped legacy admissions, including Amherst, Johns Hopkins and Carnegie Mellon.

But most have been reluctant to give up the practice, arguing that it helps build a strong intergenerational community and encourages donations, which can be used for financial aid.

Excellent!! Did any of your family members choose to go to the same University?

We all went to private universities but different ones.

Actually, my son went to a public community college first, which the Army paid for.
He also served, but voluntarily. I'm still shaking my head over that one.

Of course they'd pay for that--it was cheap.

He then, after getting an Associate's Degree, transferred to a private school to get his baccalaureate.

My son graduated magna cum laude and my daughter graduated summa cum laude.
Yet, 23 and Me insists that I'm their real father.

Go figure.

Lol... you do realize they sound exactly like I would think your kids would be... great kids who were brought up properly...and were smart to boot....;) Thank your son for his service...

Stanford is a major research lab institution. SO, their scientific research papers must be accurate or it hurts the name of science- AND WE WOULD NOT WANT THAT WOULD WE REPUBLICANS?

Anyway, this is the proper way to handle this, when you admit that you did not act fast enough to get the research errors corrected, and having known they were wrong. When you are the leader of an institution, you must pass the torch over to someone who will give the institution a fresh start on integrity and leadership.

Tessier-Lavigne fully cooperated with all of the investigations, has agreed to correct all of the mistakes, and was not found guilty of any fraud, and will return to the faculty staff and as one of the leading scientists in Stanford's research labs.

And the sun still comes up tomorrow and we all live happily forever after!

And hopefully we will continue to get closer to finding a cure for one of the most horrible debilitating diseases of man- Alzheimer's disease!
