State of the Union Address

Join a union. Then bring it up. See what the response is. I did. I heard the response of the teamsters (granted this was in 1993... so I leave open it could be different today). They espoused the same type of crap that Mutt did. The whole 'they will just change the bar on you, you have no control, blah blah blah'
It's pretty much been my experience. Anything to screw you out of a raise or a bunus.

Brent I can tell you're young just on your comment about merit pay. Merit pay is republican/cooporate speak that no one deserves a decent raise except their favorite pets. Wait till you find out that when you go to work, a bar for performance is set. You not only perform but you out perform and exceed the bar that was set, only when it comes to review time to have the bar changed and reset and told how you really didn't meet the bar and there fore your annual salary adjustment will be for about 1.2%, if you get one at all. That's what merit pay means. It also means you've given up the right to negotiate or bargain for your compensation. It's their way or highway and while that's you're lot and most of the others the pretty boy down the hall with the art history degree who's always droping by your desk for help cause he's a clueless nitwit who consistantly underporforms causing disruption to the team cause you're constantly having to fix his mistakes, get's a promotion and a big raise because he's pretty and he's the bosses nephew. That's what merit pay means. Don't be such a niave ninny.

The fact is merit pay is a joke. I earn what I earned because I went to college, learned a profession, served an apprenticeship and earned professional certification. I get compensated what I do because that's what the market pays and if my employer does not pay it I can go elsewhere to earn comparable pay and benefits. I have worked under a merit pay system for over 10 years now and have only once recieved a significant raise (5%). Everytime I have my anual review I sit their stoichly and hold my nose while I listent to some bullshit about how the bar is now being changed after I've met all performance goals set out at the beginning of the year. It stinks and I don't take it seriously.

Sounds like you're a mediocre employee. I guess mommy and daddy always telling you how awesome you were didn't really prepare you for rat race after all. LOL @ you

Why didn't you find a better job, mr. "i can go anywhere"? You putting up with no raise proves you're not half as skilled as your deluded self-estimate. Sounds like you're not a standout at your chosen profession or you'd not have any complaints. LOL @you

Are you saying you are too stupid to follow the discussion? My point is that he is an idiot to suggest that merit pay is 'bullshit' and that 'only the good old boys get paid' blah blah blah.

It seems that Mott is just a lazy dude who takes what comes his way instead of using his muscle to make opportunities for himself. He complains about not getting a raise but cclaims he's highly skilled. Well, tough guy, threaten to leave if you don't get raise and find a better opportunity. That's how find out how valuable you are. I guess we can all assume Mott is not very valuable since his company figures they don't have to give him a raise and he's still going to show up to make them money. LOL

But a lot of times merit pay is bullshit.
That's been my experience. Most of my significant raises have come from making lateral moves or because the company I was working for wanted to retain me before I left for greener pastures. The most I've ever gotten on a merit raise was a 5% increase. Most of the times it's either nothing or something less then the rate of inflation. They hardly ever have any objective criteria such as the volume of work you do, the quality/caliber of work you do. I've seen how they screw our salesmen year in and year out. Tell them that if they meet or exceed budget and acheive X percent gross margin they'll be eligible for X bonus and then tie that bonus into the companies performance and say, well it wasn't as good a year as we would have liked so fuck you no bonus. Yea....merit pay is subjective.

I know what the market value is for my profession and I know what the compensation range is. As long as my total compensation is with in that range. I'm good. I'll bust my ass for 40 to 50 hours a week for you. Want more hours? Let talk money and fuck your merit based proposals. My father told me that if you want to have your skill and profession disrespected, don't charge for it and by god was he right. That's how I feel about overtime. If I have a real and acheivable profit incentive, I'll work those hours. If not, I charge by the billable hour bro.

The best company I worked for was non-union and they didn't have merit based pay. We had base pay combined with production bonuses and ROI bonuses and that was the most motivated hardest working group of people I ever worked with and we made damned good money too!

Nice cheap shot from a GED lawn mower repairmen. Did you make a six figure in compensation last year? Probably not. Then again, neither did I.......but I came close so I must be doing something right. :)

moment of clarification, I believe he said he would open up 75% of natural gas deposits......as for Republicans being fucked, no......the response will be, "Fantastic! Why didn't you do what we asked three years sooner? What has changed that makes it a good idea now and a bad idea when people were sitting around unemployed for three years?"......

If you don't think he's trying to take credit for increased domestic production I have a bridge to sell you.

Mott, i swear the first two sentences I thought I was reading Top. I was wondering why everything was spelled right? LMAO

I have such a migraine today, I can't really think. Didn't mean to derail the thread with the Dexter question. I'm reading it and snorting at SF's posts, but I don't have the wherewithal to do more than read today.
Herb works wonders on migraines

God your a right wing schill. Some union stooge I am. I've never, ever been part of a collective bargaining unit. Not once in my life.

Merit pay is bullshit. It's a system companies impose to tell you why you're not worth what they're paying you. Only an idiot takes it seriously. I fucking don't. You can work your self to death trying to reach merit pay goals but, in the end, they'll set the bar higher or change the goals in midstream. It's pure bunk. The only ones who ever seem to get merit increases are the good ole boys and their stooges and never the people who actually get the work done. They just never seem to be able to do enough and don't try to tell me that it's any other way. I've been around the block to many times. That's the way it is. If you don't think it is that way then go ahead and be a fool and try to meet the bar. Let me know if you do it. LOL

I negotiated my compensation based on my education, experience, professional credentials and demonstrated ability to get shit done right the first time and to do so quickly and if they don't like that I can always go to work for someone else who is willing to pay me for my talents. Fuck their merit pay! Merit pay is for losers.

It's refreshing to see that attitude! :good4u:
