‘Stay The Course’ Named Top Catchphrase of 2006

Global Language Monitor, an organization that “documents, analyzes and tracks trends in language the world over” has named “stay the course” the top catchphrase of 2006.

The phrase was used repeatedly by the Bush administration to describe their strategy in Iraq.

Does anyone realize that "the War on terrorism" and other current phrases were generated by a big adman and sold to us by the administration ?

I've always found the term "islamofascism" to be one of the stupidest and most simplistic catchphrases used in 2006.

The catchphrase Islamofasicism is intended to stereotype and lump all fundamentalist muslims together, creating a lame and false impression that they are a monolithic group and that this is somehow, a worldwide war against an evil monolith. Hell, for example Dixie's always on here trying to link Hamas, the leader of Iran, and OBL together as some sort of monolithic evil that are allied and have the same goals.

Radical islam is a set of very different and distinct problems, each of which we must have a unique strategy to confront. The sunni jihaddists and the iranian theocrats are very different problems that require different solutions.

BUSH LIED, should be on the list. It was used more often and was a huge lie in itself. But that whole list is a sham. Look at some of the words they list. Not even important in the least.

Why wasn't an ambiguous term like "tons" included ?
Tons of people, tons of money, etc are common mis-useages by "leaders" today.

I don't see how a turn of phrase is "misused"...

Much like "a lot" of something. It is a descriptive phrase, there is no such thing as misuse when using such a thing. "Tons of" is much the same thing. It describes a large amount... Just because somebody doesn't like a popular turn of phrase doesn't mean that it was misused.

I don't think the list indicated misuse of the words or phrases. But they should have included CULTURE OF CORRUPTION

in pennies ?
dollars ? hundred dollar bills, nickels ???
My point is that it is not a proper term, it would be for coal or gravel, but not money or people.
It would even be right for a ton of feathers ;)

Once again, it is a descriptive phrase. Not "proper terminology". The idea of improper usage of such a phrase is odd...

I can use many different ways to describe the same thing. "A whole grip of cash"... "A flock of bills"... each is descriptive in its way.

that type of useage is fine for a used car salesman, but not for one of our leaders to use to evade truths.

LOL. Right... I've never seen anybody use such phraseology to "evade truth"...

When they need to be precise they say things like 3.2 Trillion... When they want to be descriptive they say "a ton" I don't see how it is "improper" to turn a phrase if you are a politician. They must all speak like robots?

We need the facts Damo not spin.
It isn't spin. It's simply descriptive. We also need people and not automatons. I dislike politicians too, but criticizing them for using descriptive phraseology is a bit much. All people use these... Even "spin" is a descrptive phrase. Can't you be more precise?

Yes I can be more precise. Intentional LIES and DECEPTION.
This kind of stuff is one aspect that contributed to us being in an undelcared war mess....

Saying "a ton" is not a lie or a deception. It is a description that gives a picture to those hearing it of "many"...

You are attempting to "spin" out of your own usage of descriptive phraseology to "diss" those who use descriptive phraseology...

Now, if the head of the Fed came out and started talking about a "grip" of this and a "closet full" of that when attempting to speak of economic numbers I'd all be for agreeing, it is inappropriate at that time to use descriptive phraseology and it should be precise.

However, when a politician says we have spent "a ton" of money on this "war of choice" using descriptive phrases it doesn't mean s/he is lying, it simply means s/he is being descrptive.

If someone uses the phrase a ton of money and you think they are talking about how much it weights then you are a fool, not the person speaking.

I am not the fool anyone who sucks up his garbage is the fool, because he has said nothing meaningful, just rhetoric.

Ok so when talking of gravel I say a lot of gravel was used on the road.....
Hmm how much should I pay the guy for the gravel then ?

You are gettin there Damo, keep on thinking about it.
