Study recommends total ban on smoking for soldiers

So getting blown up , killed, maimed is ok, but running a risk of getting cancer down the road a ways is not?

Sheesh What a bunch of bean counting wimps.

This might cause the draft to come back.

But the prudes last reason for not joining will be gone. A smoke free military.

sounds good to me

but maybe they should wait until we are done with the current wars or limit the ban to REMFs

my brother did not smoke until he joined the marines and noticed that smokers got nicotine breaks and non-smokers did not...

Great point...

what abour morale? Also oliver stone was on bill maher and he was talking iabout when he was in vietnam, that smoking weed was the only thing that helped calm soldiers down and give them a sense of peace admist all the chaos. I know we are talking about tabaco, but same deal.

Once President Obama achieves world peace we won't need a military any more. I think a total ban on cigarettes and alcohol would be good.

A ban on smoking for the military would be an excellent idea.

I don't think the soldiers will have any say in the matter anyway. That's the thing about signing up for the military, you're their property. If they don't want you smoking, c'est la vie.

I think it would eventually turn into a non issue for new recruits, however I don't know how they'd handle something like that for people that have been addicted for decades.

Treat it as an addiction and offer them medical help in quitting. If they can't (or won't) quit then muster them out.

There are two wars currently going on, that sounds like a horrible idea.

Although, on the other hand it does provide a very easy way out of combat which I'd definitely take advantage of if I were forced into a war zone.

No worse than having soldiers with no stamina.

If you cut off the access to cigarettes for those in the war zones and then told them they could have a smoke when the war was finished, you might see total commitment to winning from some very motivated soldiers.

Some pissed off soldiers I think.

Lets ban Guns instead they kill more troops than cigarettes does.

Agent Orange.
Explosives smoke.
Depleted uranium rounds.
blown off legs.
TBI
etc

And they want them to give up smoking for their health???

No, I want them to give up smoking because it compromises their ability to do their job.

Not at the age of most of the troops it doesn't.
They should also give up drinking during off duty?

It effects their stamina if they smoke. It impairs their ability to do their job.

If their drinking impairs their ability to do their job they will be given the choice of rehab or discharge.

Overweight is a far more serious stamina effecting problem.

And the way the military deals with that is what? They tell the soldier (or sailor) to lose weight or face a discharge. I have no problem with that either.
