Suicide--The Latest Epidemic in the Greatest Country on Earth

Is this a great country or what?

Suicide is quickly becoming a nationwide epidemic; more people are killing themselves than are dying in car accidents.

More surprising than that so many people are killing themselves in what we are told is the greatest country on earth by freaks like Micheal Medved, is what passes for semi-enlightened thought on this issue. One former resident would have us believe based on anecdotal evidence that all or most of these men are being dumped by their girlfriends or wives who are using sex as punishment and that women try and fail to kill themselves because they are only seeking attention. Others evidently even accept these conclusions as something more than the sexist tripe which they represent. No one knows why people kill themselves. Emile Durkheim tried to discern what caused suicide in his classic study from 1897, simply titled Le Suicide with little success. Sometimes they leave suicide notes but like the statement left by this man below, even when they do these statements are usually as enigmatic as the act itself and shed little light on why they did it.

When the well-know psychiatrist Bruno Bettelheim, who incidentally also committed suicide in 1990 by placing a plastic bag over his head, decided to study the people who came into Auschwitz to see if he could detect any commonalities between those who adjusted and survived and those who couldn’t adjust and didn’t survive he quickly discovered to his own dismay that there was no way of telling who would and who wouldn’t survive. That people who he thought were sure to survive didn’t last a week before they broke down and those who were the most distraught, upset and pitiful, surprised him by adjusting and surviving. I think the same thing applies to suicide. It is an option for all of us every minute of every day, some struggle with that realization and survive no matter what life throws at them, and others just can’t deal with life on it’s own terms.

It’s an epidemic and some of the most imbecilic posters here from the right will probably come to this thread to encourage all those here having a hard time with some particular problem in their life to kill themselves because that is how they roll. So get prepared for that because they enjoy mocking the real live suffering and pain that others face every day in this country! But remember this, those sociopaths here who would mock the pain of others, every suicide destroys a family and seriously and sometimes irreparably harms those who it touches.

Suicide Rate Climbs by 30 Percent in Kansas as Government Slashes Mental Health Budgets

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment recently released a startling report(PDF) showing a 30 percent increase in suicides from 2011. Nationwide, the number of deaths by suicide surpassed the number of deaths by motor vehicle accidents in 2009, the most recent year for which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided data.

The Wichita Eagle reports that the largest increase in suicides in Kansas occurred among white males, who already were the segment of the population most likely to take their own lives. More than 80 percent of suicides in Kansas last year were men, like Scott Dennis, a 42-year-old fitness company owner.

Last year, Dennis was busy getting ready for an industry convention in Las Vegas.

Dennis had already paid for a $20,000 sponsored dinner, booked his flight, hotel and rental car and sent out some work e-mails.

He showered and shaved. He packed his bag.

“He wrote a note that said, ‘I can’t live like this anymore,’ and left his wallet and his watch on his desk, drove to Wal-Mart down the street and shot himself in the chest,” said Brook Phillips, a friend of Dennis for 35 years.

Nationally, the CDC reported a spike in suicide rates in 2010 among the middle-aged, a 28 percent rise overall, a 40 percent jump among white Americans, and among men in their 50s, suicides increased by more than 48 percent. Guns remained the leading method used in all suicides, followed by poisoning, overdoses, and suffocation.

Suicide is a good thing, it gets rid of the sick and weak and they are helping the environment.

Meh, if people dont want to live, they shouldnt have to.

I do think there should be more focus and outreach to teens (notoriously impulsive and their judgement still developing) and especially for our veterans. I dont think the govt owes individuals much, but I believe they owe our vets any medical and psychiatric care they need. Lifetime care.
