Surprise, global warming = governments telling people how to live, stop "overshopping"

Our fridge is a moderate sized one. A chest deep freeze is a must for us though. We keep half a beef (slaughtered ourselves) per year and I put at least 2, sometimes 3 deer in every season as well. We have conserved a lot by super-insulating our house, cutting out unecessary trips to town (50 mile round trip) and I bought some winter gear so I can ride my motorcycle (60 mpg) to work and back most every day. For the last year and a half I have only put one tank of gas per month in my truck and we have cut our overall fuel consumption for all vehicles by more than $800 per year. We as a country must realize that changes need to be made in this area.

Good Job Leaning. I have done most of the same stuff. Well except for the motorcycle riding . brrr
And I have not done mine because of tight money either.
I do it because I just hate being wasteful and my self esteem does not depend on a new car or other possessions.
I buy what I need plus a few frivilous things. A big LCD TV for instance :)
Still not much on worth watching though....

Same here uscitizen. I don't do it because of money or because of my fear of global warming. I have just come to the conclusion that it is being more responsible and just makes good sense. I am going to splurge next weekend and make an unecessary trip to town......got to take my wife on a date for her birthday...;)

Riding in the cold isn't fun, but it saves the money. I just miss the radio.

Oh well, that's another thing. I don't do radios even when I'm in the truck. I usually just sing to myself. As long as the windows are up they can't get me for noise pollution.:)

Don't ya have an iPod and earbuds ?

I bought a little $49 MP player a couople of weeks ago, cool.
And WM I only rip CD's / LP's that I own to put on it ;)
If you can't hear a problem when you are riding, then you are foolish indeed.

However, the iPod wouldn't be a solution as I listen to talk radio most often.

I agree. The consumerist society we live in brainwashes us from a very young age. Right now there is this new hot line of computer toys called “webkins” and they come out in all different kinds of animals. So every time a child obtains one of them, they move on to wanting the next one. My niece has over 20 of them, and she was bugging me for the dalmation (I think) and I asked her to tell me how long she felt happy for after she got a new webkin. And wanting the dalmation, she told me “for a long time”. And I said, oh yeah, well how long before you start wanting the next webkin? And she laughed.

She is already being trained to be a consumer…to obtain and immediately after obtaining, to move on to desiring the next object. It’s alarming.
I personally have changed my own consumer habits over the past five years. But you have to realize there is a problem, and think long and hard about what you are doing, before you can change.

:P

Whenever I was a kid, I was addicted to games, and I wanted ever new game that came out. I'd beg my parents, but my parents just literally broke the Nintendo. I started playing on the computer then, but there weren't many games.

So, in about 2003 I moved onto bittorrent piracy, and downloaded every game I ever wanted for the Nintendo, Super Nintendo, all of that, and every game I wanted from the computer. I don't really play games that much anymore. (Oddly enough, that never really happened to me pirating music, but music's different)

It really takes having an overabundance of everything that you want to realize how worthless it is.

It kind of gets into what I was talking about in my "Happiness" rant. I think our society is so depressed because we literally have about everything we could ever want. We live like kings, even middle class families. And instead of producing and making the world better, we just sit and get entertained all the time. I mean, just think about how much free time you have. The average person has almost 8 hours of free time that they blow each day. I have almost 12 hours of free time a day, and I don't really even study that much.

Seriously, I haven't pirated in a long while. The chance of getting caught is about nill but I just don't have much desire to. As soon as I get a credit card I'm just going to download a few songs from ITunes that I really like and be done with it.

I'm honestly probably the least consumerist person here. I had 1600 dollars whenever I quite my job 3 months ago and I have 1400 dollars now.

Of course, I don't have bills to pay. But still.

I'm too poor to be a consumeristist. I think the fact that choice is not available to me is highly unfair, cruel and unusual. My government should draft legislation in order to prevent this from happening in the future. Why should I have to sit on that ugly couch when the government can buy me a brand new one. Think of how great this would be for my self-esteem. Of course, it would smell like dog regardless.

Has there been any proposal in Canada that would legislate the government pay for redecorating if you are not happy with your sofa? I haven't seen one here. Do you know of one?

Actually, there is a something called 'community start up'. A municiple thing, for people on welfare. A single mother can get 2k every two yrs to move and buy new shit.

It sounds like an interesting program, I'll check into the details. Maybe we could use it here.

I was wrong about the amount, it's $1500. Not bad though.

Having worked with lots people on social assistance, moving isn't a requirement for receiving cash when in need of the above. One girl had a dog that ate her furniture - cha, ching.

So a maximum of 1,500 dollars every two years to either help someone relocate, or, help someone keep their current residence if they have received an eviction notice.

I've heard of worse ways of spending that kind of money, and most of those have been legislated into law....or into the military budget.

Sounds good! I'd say we can learn something from Canada, after all.
