My support for Trump skyrocketed when he rained on McCain that day. McCain had just finished insulting a whole bunch of vets attending a Trump campaign rally, so I was glad somebody leaned into that rhino.

Remember when Hillary did the basket of deplorables thing? It targeted half of the country- including thousands of vets. Mccain did something very similar and and said Trump "fired up the crazies", when he commented after a Trump rally that many vets attended in Phoenix, sometime in the middle of July 2015. I remember feeling pretty insulted when I heard his comments, and couldn't believe he would throw out such insults when so many fellow vets like me were the target of those remarks. The early attacks of anti Trumpers like McCain and Megyn Kelly were why I stopped contributing to the Cruz campaign and switched my support to Trump.

So, McCain did not directly insult the vets, he insulted the crazies. Do you see yourself as a crazy? Otherwise, why be insulted by his comment not directed at you?
